KING KOBRA’S Classic First Two Releases Set For Reissue

Artist:
Categories:

DURING THE 1980s the music scene was exploding with an abundance of great rock bands - including multi-platinum sellers such as Mötley Crüe, Quiet Riot and RATT - but there was always room for talentted new contenders. For KING KOBRA this was an invitation from heaven, launching onto a landscape that was primed for killer hard rock, enormous sales, and unlimited airplay.

It comes as no surprise then, that respected re-issue label ROCK CANDY RECORDS has turned a spotlight on their first two classic albums, ‘Ready To Strike’ and ‘Thrill Of A Lifetime’.  Both titles are set to be reissued on February 10th having been fully remastered with enhanced 16-page booklets featuring rare photos, new interviews, and a 4,000 word essay penned by Malcolm Dome.

Formed in California in 1984, by seasoned drummer Carmine Appice (Cactus, Beck Bogart & Appice, Ozzy Osbourne) and featuring vocalist Mark Free (Unruly Child), guitarists John Michael Philips & Mick Sweda (Bulletboys) and bassist Johnny Rod (WASP), the band won instant attention for their unique look - four blondes and one brunette. Producedd by Spencer Proffer (Quiet Riot, WASP, Cheap Trick) and signed to Capitol Records, the band’s debut album, originally issued in 1985, won them the attention of fans and critics alike by delivering one of the year’s best records. Tracks such as ‘Hunger’, ‘Tough Guys’, ‘Piece Of The Rock’ and the title track itself are pivotal examples of some of the best mid 80’s hard rock.

‘Thrill Of A Lifetime’, their sophomore album, originally issued in 1986, saw the band shift gear, modernising their sound and focussing on more accessible songs, perhaps modelled on the chart success of artists like Bon Jovi and Cinderella. The material was spearheaded by the hugely infectious ‘Iron Eagle (Never Say Die)’, a track that was included on the hit movie ‘Iron Eagle’. Elsewhere there’s ‘Feel The Heat’, ‘Raise Your Hands To Rock’ and ‘Dream On’ for further proof of their  hard rocking credentials.

BLACK DIAMONDS Deliver 'Once Upon A Time' March 24

Friday, March 24, 2017
Categories:

Swiss Hard Rockers BLACK DIAMONDS will return with their second album “Once Upon A Time” on March 24 on German label AOR Heaven.

Black Diamonds, formed in 2004, are a hard rock band based in the Rhine Valley in eastern Switzerland. Musically and stylistically orientates on  80s rock music, which they pack into an energetic stage performance.
In 2008 the group released their first, self-produced album «First Strike». It contained ten original songs plus a cover version of Chuck Berry's classic «Rock n’ Roll Music». “First Strike” today is out of print. A couple of songs however were completely repolished and re-recorded and found their way to the latest album «Once Upon A Time».
Black Diamonds were asked to compose a club anthem for the local Black Thunder MC in 2011. This song is available as digital single.
2013 saw the recording and release of the second long player «Perfect Sin». It was followed up by the extended «Perfect Swiss» tour, which brought the band through their home country and the adjacent countries. The two videos for «We Want To Party» and «I’ll Be OK» were shot and released during the tour. In addition another digital single, a cover version of the Rolling Stones' classic «Jumpin’ Jack Flash», was released.
The quartet took part in the official TV spot for the Swiss railway company (SBB) in 2013. On the set they made acquaintance with the producer of the Swiss TV serial «Pimp it or kick it», who offered them to appear in a complete episode. The show was broadcasted in the same year.
The new album «Once Upon A Time» was recorded in the band-owned studio and mixed by Tobias Lindell. Dragan Tanaskovic from the Bohus Sound Studios in Gothenburg Sweden (ABBA, Europe, In Flames, H.E.A.T., and many more) took care of the mastering.
The only exception is an additional piano version of «Vampires Of The Night», which was completely produced by Andreas Frei (Fäaschtbänkler)
Line-up: Michael Kehl, vocals, guitar; Andi Fässler, bass; Manuel Peng, drums; Andreas Rohner, lead guitar.

New ART NATION Album Liberation Out April 28

Artist:
Friday, April 28, 2017
Categories:
News Feed

Art Nation, the fast rising rock act from Gothenburg, Sweden, will release its highly anticipated second album Liberation, April 28th via Sony Music/Gain.

“When the time came to make the new album, we sought to broaden our sound and push the limits of the genre, while still sounding like ourselves”, singer and frontman Alexander Strandell explains.

This time around, the songs have more versatility and finesse, together with the melodies, catchy hooks, and stellar instrumental performances that Art Nation’s followers have come to expect. The band has been working closely together with selected external songwriters, bringing diversity to the album.

The album was recorded once again at Top Floor Studios by producer/engineer Jakob Herrmann (Amaranthe, Evergrey, Hardcore Superstar), and co-produced by Theodor Hedström and the studio’s assistant engineer Christoffer Borg (Kee Marcello, Bob Hund), who is also one of Art Nation’s guitarists. To further emphasise each song’s identity, the producers and the band made the decision to work with multiple mixing engineers to equally share the mixing duties with Herrmann/Borg. Bringing back Jacob Hansen (Amaranthe, Volbeat), who mixed previous album “Revolution”, felt like an obvious choice. For a third mixing engineer, they chose to work with Adam “Nolly” Getgood (Periphery, Devin Townsend). The album was mastered by Dragan Tanaskovic (In Flames, Avatar).

Spanning over six months, the recording sessions were both creative and exhausting, as the album’s sound was shaped.
“I think we learned more about ourselves and our music in these six months, than we ever have done during our time as a band”, says drummer Carl Tudén.

Liberation is a musical rollercoaster, starting out with the punchy “Ghost Town”, leading up to the catchy “Kiss Up & Kick Down”, and after taking it down with intricate ballad “When Stars Align”, the instrumental performances of “What Do You Want” will surely make the listener want to go for another ride.

Your first glimpse of the new album will be the single ”The Real Me”, to be released February 24th. The second single “Ghost Town” will be released the following month, on March 24th, and will feature a music video filmed by Owe Lingvall (Meshuggah, Hammerfall).

The band will tour throughout the year, including a highly anticipated show at Sweden Rock Festival, Scandinavia’s largest rock festival.

JOHN WETTON Loses Battle With Cancer

Artist:
Categories:
News Feed

Official Press Release / Rock music legend John Wetton sadly passed away in the early hours of this morning, Tuesday 31st January 2017, after a long and courageous battle against colon cancer.

John rose to fame with King Crimson in the early 70s during the iconic Red era and later formed the band UK. In the early 1980s he was a founder member of supergroup ASIA which was his biggest commercial success. The band's 1982 self-titled debut album was the biggest selling album in the world that year and gave fans and mainstream radio the mega-hit Heat of the Moment.

John also enjoyed a successful solo career, including the seminal album Battle Lines, and formed iCon with ASIA bandmate Geoff Downes. In 2006 the original line-up of ASIA reformed and toured the world several times to promote four new studio albums.

John had been planning to tour with ASIA for the band's forthcoming US arena tour with Journey and following the success of his solo Studio Recordings Anthology, to continue working on the ongoing re-issue programme of his solo albums, via his own Primary Purpose label.

John valued his over 11 years of sobriety and volunteered time in fellowship with other alcoholics to share his experience, strength and hope with them. John is survived by his recently wed wife Lisa and 18 year old son Dylan, brother Robert and mother Peggy.

The very last studio song of John Wetton's career was the closing track on the most recent and indeed final ASIA album 'Gravitas' and included the profound lyrics 'Think the best of me, till we meet again.'

A statement by Geoff Downes:

It is with great sadness and a heavy heart, that I have to report we have lost my dearest friend, brother, bandmate and long term musical collaborator, John Wetton, who has passed away after a long and tenacious battle with cancer. He will be remembered as one of the world's finest musical talents, and I for one of many was wholly blessed by his influence. It was a massive privilege for me to have worked with this genius so closely on our numerous projects together over the years. His bass playing was revolutionary. His voice was from the gods. His compositions - out of this world. His sense of melody and harmony - unreal. He was literally a 'special one'.

But John was much more than a gigantic and unique musical talent. He was a supremely intelligent man, marked with his great observations and wisdom about life; all couched within his wicked sense of humour. The wit was dark and deep, only fully perceptible to those on his same wavelength. I was fortunate enough to be able to be on that wavelength, and discover that we had much in common. Many of his personal life experiences were reflected in his lyrical contributions to the songs. His heart was always in the music. That was John, through and through. It was always about - the music.

As a person, he was fiercely loyal, loving and generous, particularly to those he cared about. But he could be as stubborn as a mule or as gracious as a nobleman, depending on the mood that grabbed him on any particular day. There were some who couldn't read his brilliant mind and complex personality. Some found him charming, others infuriating. But however you found John, there was no denying his rare talent as a musician and songwriter was second to none.

Both of us having been brought up with similar backgrounds in provincial England, we shared a love of many things - sport, and in particular - football, English church music, current affairs, comedy, literature, you name it....pretty much everything that 2 kids from the sticks were exposed to in our youth.

Our planets seemed to be immediately in alignment when we first met in early 1981. There was a laddish camaraderie that grew between us as we became as close as two non-related brothers could be. He was an avid reader and film enthusiast, something he pursued with great interest. This helped inspire him to some wonderful lyrics to the literally hundreds of songs we composed together. Back then, we immediately hit the ground running as we composed much of the debut ASIA album together and forged a formidable partnership which lasted right up until now. It was a wholly natural process for us, whereby we could knock out 2 or 3 songs in an afternoon. They were always greeted with our gentlemanly handshake and smiles once we had wrapped up another one in the bag.

Above all else though, his passion for life was to the fore. The battles he endured throughout were immense and well documented. Firstly with alcohol, which he so resolutely overcame, then open heart surgery and finally cancer, which sadly was to take his life in the end. He once observed to me that this disease is a "merciless assassin". Just another example of his perception and the descriptive language that he was so richly blessed with. He took all of these battles on board with great bravery and almost a 'laissez-faire' attitude, tinged with his inimitable wry wit.

To say I will miss my him greatly is beyond understatement. He was such an inspiration to me. We were planning another album, but sadly he was not well enough to complete it. I feel heartbroken about this, as I knew John thought it was to be one of our finest albums to date. I remain as proud as ever of our Wetton/Downes writing partnership. I am hoping one day that I will be able to finish it, and that it will be appreciated by all those who loved his and our music, and most importantly, a legacy he would have been proud of.

Life will not be the same without him. And words are not really enough to describe the loss I feel right now, and the many friends and fans all over the World will also be feeling. It is the end of an era for all of us. But we will soldier on - the music of John Wetton needs to be heard loud and clear from the rooftops.

Dearest John, may you rest in peace brother.
X
Geoffrey
Please join me in sending our sincerest thoughts and prayers to Lisa, Dylan and the entire Wetton family at this difficult time.

A statement by Carl Palmer:

With the passing of my good friend and musical collaborator, John Wetton, the world loses yet another musical giant. John was a gentle person who created some of the most lasting melodies and lyrics in modern popular music. As a musician, he was both brave and innovative, with a voice that took the music of ASIA to the top of the charts around the world. His ability to triumph over alcohol abuse made him an inspiration to many who have also fought that battle. For those of us who knew him and worked with him, his valiant struggle against cancer was a further inspiration. I will miss his talent, his sense of humor and his infectious smile. May you ride easy, my old friend.

Produced by the band and mixed by the legendary Kevin Shirley (Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith), this new album is set to further enhance the standing of this remarkable band. From the body blow riffs of “Read All About It,” to the beautiful melodies of upcoming first single “I Don’t Need Your Loving”, from the groove of “High Class Woman” to the classic feeling ballad “Making Me Pay”, this is an album that shows the bands influences stem from iconic rock and roll shrine of rock albums from the 1970s – many years before the band members were born – merged with a truly contemporary feel. Driving riffs and instant melodies all overlaid with the unique and powerful vocals of Nathan James.

Nathan James on “Inglorious II”: “It came together very organically after spending time touring together and felt great. We knew we were making an album this time too! We focused on getting our sounds just right so we could get into the studio and out in the least time possible. Between Adde's flat in Malmö, Sweden and Colin’s family home in Somerset, England, this album came together quickly. We spent three weekends in Somerset, writing in a kind of 9-5 fashion, whereby we knew we were at work. Then after a lovely home cooked dinner we would relax, have a few beers and balance out our hard work, the environment is so important to be creative and we had it good!”

2016 was a stunning year for UK five-piece Inglorious. Their eponymous debut album was released through Frontiers Music Srl in February. The album received widespread critical acclaim at press, multiple A lists at radio and a lauded performance on Vintage TV. The band toured across the world, with numerous high profile shows in the UK and Europe – including show stopping performances at Download Festival 2016 and Ramblin' Man Fair 2016, support slots for The Winery Dogs and The Dead Daisies, and culminating with a support slot for Steel Panther’s European Arena tour in October and a co-headline UK tour with label-mates Last In Line in November 2016.

Formed in February 2014, the band is fronted by Nathan James, who made a name for himself having sung for the multi-platinum selling Trans-Siberian Orchestra, and Scorpions guitar legend Uli Jon Roth.  Nathan was looking for like-minded musicians that desired to make incredible rock music in a very honest fashion. The band’s lineup on “Inglorious II” was completed by rhythm guitarist Wil Taylor, lead guitarist Andreas Eriksson, bassist Colin Parkinson and drummer Phil Beaver.

The band have also announced the departure of album guitarist Wil Taylor right after the end of the new album's recording. They are delighted to announce that for 2017 and moving forward they are reuniting with original member Drew Lowe on guitar, who is joining the band as a permanent member. “Inglorious II” will be released through Frontiers Music Srl on May 12, 2017.

2017 Melodic Album Preview

2017 is offering up a staggering number of new releases – from newcomers, to familiar names, to classic rock legends – there’s something for everyone as they say.

Here is a quick summary of some of those releases and some insights into the ones that I’ve been fortunate enough to hear.

Night Ranger – Don’t Let Up (March 24) Another well-produced hard rocking release with a couple of slower acoustic ballads, but very diverse – perhaps the most diverse NR album yet. The lead single is the most commercial and recognizable NR song, but also listen out for Running Out Of Time, Truth and Jamie.

Eclipse – Monumentum (March 24) There was never any doubt right? The lads have done it again and perhaps turned things up yet another notch as far as sonic bombardment and guitar shredding. Plus Philip Crusner on drums is fantastic. It’s heavy, its melodic, it’s brilliant! Look out for The Downfall Of Eden, Hurt and Killing Me. Extrordinary stuff and exactly what I was hoping to hear!

Brother Firetribe – Sundown (March 23) hang onto your hats boys and girlsd – here comes another multi-layered, guitar and keyboard soaked, big budget Scandi melodic rock album. Easily better than the great last album, and growing on me more every day, BFT fans can be assured they are getting a killer album here!

Pride Of Lions – Fearless (Feb 24) More or less, just another POL album. But that isn’t said with any complacency or hesitation. It’s another great set of songs from the pen of Jim Peterik and the voice of Toby Hitchcock. Diverse, pompous and theatrical as the couple of albums before it, more reliably memorable melodic rock.

Lionville – A World Of Fools (Feb 24) Always great to hear Lars singing and while we wait for a new Work Of Art album, this is more than enough quality AOR to fill the void. Expertly produced and featuring slick, pure AOR at it’s European best.

Tokyo Motor Fist (Feb 24) It’s a lot of fun. It’s quite varied and definitely reaches into Def Leppard territory during the second half, it really is a great mix of Ted Poley and Steve Brown’s talents. Production is pretty loose, but the energy and hooks are infectious.

Unruly Child – Can’t Go Home (Feb 24) Never a band to do things in the simple, structured way, this is another quality AOR album, more varied than the last album and still weighing in on the lighter side, but there’s a lot of musical intelligence in these songs and the performances.

One Desire (March 24) Pure Scandi-melodic bliss. Layers of everything (vocals, guitars and keys) and a monster production right out of 1985. These guys make the 80s sound like now with their contemporary production, yet classic AOR sound. Absolutely brilliant.

Black Star Riders – Heavy Fire (Feb 2) More Lizzy-like guitar driven 70s rock n roll and more quality music. Wasn’t as impressed with the last album, but this sounds up there with the debut.

Also coming up to watch out for:

Thunder, Dirty White Boyz, Black Country Communion, TNT, Steelheart, Treat (Live), Art Nation, Crazy Lixx, H.E.A.T, Degreed, Toby Hitchcock, Riverdogs, Harem Scarem, Mr. Big and Heaven & Earth!

And don’t forget the Arti Tisi archives from MelodicRock Records and new announcements due very shortly about 2 classic and unmistakably amazing albums that were never released back in the 80s!

Plus new albums from Faith Circus and a few other familiar MRR names.

In early 2016, Ex Kiss of the Gypsy & Kingdom of Deadmen frontman/guitarist, Tony Mitchell started writing & recording what was to be his 5th solo studio album.

He set out to return to his melodic/AOR rock style that was associated with him in his previous bands leading up to the raw classic rock style of Kiss of the Gypsy & the heavy rocking Kingdom of Deadmen.

It became evident to Mitchell that the songs had a real magic about them & rather than finish the album & release it on his own XGypsy music label which he had done with previous albums, he thought he would test the water by sending a handful of tracks out to a few melodic rock record companies.

All were blown away & wanted to release it there & then but what swayed Mitchell's decision was when he received a call from Khalil Turk from Escape Music.

After a conversation about the recording of the songs, Khalil suggested that he introduced Mitchell to a few musicians that he has worked with, to make the songs sound even better as Mitchell played all instruments & vocals on the demos.

The musicians included Paul Hume (lead guitar) & Neil Ogden (drums) from classic rock bands,Demon & Lawless,
Nigel Bailey (bass) from melodic rock bands, Bailey, Lifeline & 3 Lions also, Jamie Crees (guitar) from Lawless.

All brought their individual style to the table & was evident that something very special was happening ... Dirty White Boyz was born.
They have all come together to form an allegiance of AOR/Classic/Melodic Rock & each lending their style & craft to the dynamic songs for this debut album.

DWB have tried to use all the ingredients from their rich history, Mitchell's raw, rock vocals & punchy thick riff guitars, Ogden's thunderous, rock solid drumming, Hume's flawless, majestic lead guitar licks & solos, Crees's power riffs & twin lead & Bailey's thumping, ground shaking bass lines, all of which are singers that can harmonise effortlessly.

Now with the debut album, Down & Dirty finished, it's all systems go. The album not only hits you like a freight train, it also leaves you breathless in it's a combination of melodic gems, Anthemic rockers & a few heart wrenching power ballads for good measure.
Songs that will shake the very roof off any venue, songs that will take you on an emotional rollercoaster ride & songs that will stand the test of time

Dirty White Boyz are here !!! Jump aboard this Rock train, get down & dirty & let's enjoy the ride !!!

BIO:
Whoever said “Rock is Dead!” obviously forgot to mention its demise to Johnny Lima.
Born to Portuguese immigrants in a small town in central California, Lima got his first taste of Rock ‘N Roll at the tender age of four, when his parents let him stay up late one night to catch KISS on a TV show. Little did they know that it was that one band, on that one TV show, that would convince their child that all he was meant to do in his life was to Rock ‘N Roll All Night. After many years of “playing” to his favorite KISS records with a tennis racket, his parents finally gave in and bought him his first guitar, eight years later at age 12.
“I was too impatient to ‘learn’ the guitar the proper way. I wanted to get down to writing songs the minute I picked up the guitar for the first time” said Lima. “And I’m glad that was the approach I took. To this day, I still meet guitar players that blow me away with their technique, but they can’t write a song to save their life. Writing songs is how you make money in this business -- not playing guitar solos.”

A few years later, Lima took his acquired songwriting and vocal talents north to the San Francisco Bay Area in search of the ultimate rock band. After fronting a couple of popular local Bay Area bands, that didn’t amount to much outside of the Bay, Johnny decided it was time to take it to the next level. By doing so, he’d have to do it alone. After spending a few years on his own honing his songwriting skills, Johnny entered the studio to record his debut solo album with money his parents gave him. In 1996 his debut album was independently released worldwide. A brave move, considering the musical climate had changed drastically and any rock music with hooks and melody was now out of fashion with the mainstream.

However, it was an album that over 10 years later would command upwards of $80 on eBay since it was out of print only two years after its release. Although the music business wasn’t kind to him in his own backyard, across the Atlantic, Lima's style of music was still respected and garnered the attention of many independent labels in Europe, those hell bent on keeping melodic rock alive. Lima's music caught the attention of Now and Then Productions in England, who signed him to a production deal in 1998. A year later, the follow-up to his debut album, Shine On, was released by Italy’s Frontiers Records. The album earned rave reviews all over the world, including a perfect score in Scream Magazine (Norway) and Majestic Magazine (Holland).

Lima was also invited to perform at the annual Gods of AOR show in England in 1999 and 2000. On his return from England in 2000, Johnny wasted no time and began writing music for his third album that was scheduled to be released in 2001. Little did he know that 2001 was going to be a very important year in his personal life, and that music would take a backseat for the first time. Lima married his longtime girlfriend Cara in 2001 and in December they welcomed the birth of their son, Ashton.
Made in California wouldn’t see the light of day until 2003. Released by Frontiers Records, Made in California was an album that showcased Lima’s knack for big hooks, big vocals, and was the perfect soundtrack to any rock fan’s summer. It was also the last album Lima would record for Now and Then Productions and Frontiers Records. During this time, Lima’s debut album from 1996 was becoming a much sought after album amongst rock fans and therefore harder than ever to find.
