STEVEN TYLER AND JOE PERRY'S POWERFUL NEW VERSION OF AEROSMITH'S CLASSIC 'DREAM ON,'
--AS HEARD ON ESPN'S BOSTON MARATHON SPECIAL--
AVAILABLE ON ITUNES JULY 31, 2014

The world heard a new version of the AEROSMITH classic 'Dream On' during the Spring 2014 premiere of ESPN's award-winning news magazine show, E:60. Recorded in Los Angeles in early April, the song features Steven Tyler and Joe Perry, who are joined by the Southern California Children's Chorus on this arrangement of 'Dream On (Boston Strong 2014).' The track will be released today as a single via iTunes. In a powerful moment at last night's AEROSMITH concert at The Forum, in Inglewood, CA the band surprised the audience by bringing the Southern California Children's Chorus on stage to perform this special rendition of 'Dream On (Boston Strong 2014).'

"The tragedy that took place during the Boston Marathon was unfathomable, but Boston is incredibly resilient and became even stronger. I am so honored to release this version of 'Dream On' and to be able to have had the Southern California Children's Chorus perform with us last night was a beautiful moment, a true gift from up above," says Steven Tyler.

'The heinous act that took place during the Boston Marathon which shook not only the city but the world and touched us all demanded a positive response,' Joe Perry said.  'Boston Strong was that response and gave an example of our city's inner strength. I would like to think that the strength of our performance on 'Dream On' last night with the Southern California Children's Chorus in LA at the Forum was another rallying point for the goodness in all of us.'

'Dream On (Boston Strong 2014)' debuted Tuesday, April 15 on 'E:60 Presents Dream On: Stories from Boston's Strongest,' a special hour dedicated to the one-year anniversary of the Boston Marathon bombings.  The show presented five stories of survivors, narrated by celebrity voices of Boston At 2:49 PM, on April 15, 2013, as scores of spectators cheered on the Boston Marathon runners approaching the finish line, two hand-made bombs exploded.  In a split second, the lives of hundreds of people were forever changed. E:60 presented a special program remembering the lives lost and paying tribute to those who survived, their journeys of perseverance, courage, strength and love in the past twelve months.

In July, AEROSMITH embarked on this summer's definitive rock experience, the LET ROCK RULE tour across North America with Slash. The tour kicked off Thursday, July 10 at Nikon at Jones Beach Theatre in Wantagh, NY making stops in Boston, MA. NUBIAN ROSE Ink Deal With UK Label Livewire/Cargo Records

Swedish hard rockers NUBIAN ROSE have inked a deal with UK label Livewire/Cargo Records. Their sophomore album, ‘Mental Revolution‘, is scheduled for a November release. The new album is armed with even heavier riffs, deeper melodies and a more mature production.

Sweden’s master producer and studio wizard, Tobias Lindell, who has produced albums such as ‘Tear The Walls Down‘ and ‘Address The Nation‘ by HEAT, ‘Split Your Lip, from Hardcore Superstar and ‘Last Look Of Eden‘, by Europe, has mixed ‘Mental Revolution‘ and given it an outstanding and impeccable sound. NUBIAN ROSE are planning on taking the next step of their career and aiming to hit the top division.
Christer said, “We are very happy to sign with Livewire/Cargo Records for our second album. They have a reputation as being one of the most honest and hardworking label’s in the business and that says A LOT in the music industry. They have also shown true love to NUBIAN ROSE and our music and that’s of course also very important to us“.

It’s very exciting to be working with one of my favourite new bands of recent years and signing NUBIAN ROSE to Livewire/Cargo Records has been an aim for some time” –John Dryland (Cargo Records)

NUBIAN ROSE are:
Sofia Lilja Åkerlund – vocals
Christer Åkerlund – lead guitar
Simeon Liljegren – bass
Torbjörn Weijnesjö – guitar, keyboards
Thomas Weijnesjö – Drums

Founded in Stockholm, Sweden, in 2011, NUBIAN ROSE have already made a name for themselves as one of Sweden’s top acts when it comes to energetic, heavy riffing, melody driven, Hard Rock. NUBIAN ROSE evolves around the magnetic charisma and majestic voice of Sofia Lilja, combined with the unique talent of guitarist Christer ÅkerlundNUBIAN ROSE has made sure that they are a force to be reckoned with.

After planning a self-financed, low-key release of their debut album, ‘Mountain‘, in 2012, they were shocked and excited by how the music spread like wildfire worldwide. Within weeks of the Swedish release, they were played on radio stations in the US, the UK, Italy, France and throughout Europe. Rock fans everywhere immediately recognised their hook-filled brand of Hard Rock with tunes such as; ‘Ever See Your Face‘, ‘Reckless‘, ‘Mountain‘ and the outstanding power ballad ‘How Am I‘. Soon they were featured in great rock magazines such as Classic Rock and the legendary Japanese publication, Burrn!. The reviews were excellent, Classic Rock Magazine(8/10), Powerplay (9/10), Rock Hard (8/10), Burrn! (83%), to name a few of the key publications.

Long before the European release of ‘Mountain‘, NUBIAN ROSE were also booked to play the main stage at the first Hard Rock Hell AOR festival in Rotherham 2013. This was the band’s first European show and their appearance was one of the festivals most talked about with Sofia Lilja sporting a Union Jack cat suit for part of the show to mark the event!

This Autumn it’s time for NUBIAN ROSE to hit the ground running, their sophomore album, ‘Mental Revolution‘, is set for release on Livewire/Cargo Records.

VAN HALEN Rumored Documentary "Unlikely"

Word spread last week of rumoured secret Van Halen project tied to their new studio album (currently in the works, but with no firm release or completion timeframe).

The rumor alluded to the band preparing a documentary film of the process behind regrouping to record the last record A Different Kind Of Truth and the subsequent tour.

I reached out to my usual Van Halen sources to see if this rumor held any merit and as of right now, the only thing I have uncovered is that such a project is highly unlikely,

According to my long-time trusted source, there was "very little video, if any, shot during the making of the album."

On tour the first leg had "little to no video footage shot", but on the second leg, vocalist David Lee Roth privately had "a guy out on the road shooting lots of video footage."

As a footnote, as we all know, David Lee Roth has been living in Japan for a number of years now and has apparently been getting extensive tattoo work done "on his back and his chest and arms", choosing Japanese masters to do it - nearing close to 200 hours of ink work so far!

QUEENSRYCHE WITH ORIGINAL LEAD SINGER GEOFF TATE TO CHANGE ITS NAME TO 'OPERATION: MINDCRIME' AFTER CURRENT FAREWELL TOUR ENDS

'OPERATION: MINDCRIME' FEATURING GEOFF TATE, RUDY SARZO, SIMON WRIGHT, RANDY GANE AND KELLY GRAY TO ENTER STUDIO SHORTLY AFTER TOUR TO BEGIN RECORDING TRILOGY PROJECT

On the very day his 'Farewell Tour' as Queensryche begins, Geoff Tate ' one of rock's quintessential front men and the lead vocalist heard on all Queensryche hits since the inception of the band ' has announced that his currentt version of Queensryche will be forging ahead as OPERATION: MINDCRIME after the tour ends.

Named after Queensryche's epic concept album from 1988, OPERATION: MINDCRIME -- a band consisting of Geoff Tate, Rudy Sarzo (Ozzy Osbourne, Whitesnake), Simon Wright (AC/DC, Dio), Randy Gane (Myth) and Kelly Gray (Queensryche 1998 '' 2001, 2012 ' present) -- will be entering the studio in September to begin recording a trilogy project that Geoff's been working on for the past two years.

Tate, who has always enjoyed telling stories through music, considers the creation of the forthcoming trilogy one of his biggest and most ambitious works to date.

'I tried to reduce the story and eventually got it down to 37 ideas that needed representing to complete the story,' comments Geoff. 'I knew that one record wouldn't cover it and that it would have to be a trilogy. It's an exciting project and one we'd like to release the first part of sometime next spring.'

With the evolution of his band, Geoff would like to concentrate on concept and story albums in the years to come. Fans like to call it, 'Thinking Man's Metal' and Geoff plans to continue expanding the musical dimensions of your mind.

'It doesn't seem that long ago when I first brought the Mindcrime story to the band' they were, initially, against it. Chris DeGarmo was the first one to get on board and, once he did, we were able to move forward with what became one of our greatest achievements as a band.'

With the release Operation: Mindcrime ' which won critical and popular accllaim and comparisons to the Who's Tommy and Pink Floyd's The Wall ' Queensryche went on to bring their progressive music to sold-out audiences the world over.

With Geoff at the helm, Queensryche sold over 20 million albums worldwide and performed in over 46 countries.

That was then, this is now and Geoff Tate is looking forward to what lies ahead with his trilogy project.

'It is so refreshing to be able to concentrate on the many stories and ideas that I have been working on with no boundaries or restrictions,' states Tate, further adding, 'With the newly-named band, I think fans will continue to enjoy the music we create and perform together and hope they share this new musical journey with us.'

Beginning July 30, Geoff Tate and his band mates will be spanning the states for a 22-date trek of what will be Geoff's remaining performances as Queensryche Starring Geoff Tate ' The Farewell Tour.

While the name has changed, the distinctive rock vocals of Geoff Tate remain the same.

It's time to enjoy what is now known as the band, OPERATION: MINDCRIME.

R.I.P Dick Wagner. Another big loss to the rock world.

'Dick Wagner was the consummate gentleman axeman,' Kiss' Gene Simmons says.

Dick Wagner, the guitarist, songwriter and bandleader who worked with Alice Cooper, Lou Reed, Kiss and Aerosmith, among others, died Wednesday (July 30) at the age of 71 in Phoenix.

Wagner, who was also part of the groups The Frost and Ursa Major, had been hospitalized after contracting a lung infection following heart surgery in early July. Though he had posted a Facebook message on July 21 saying "I can't wait to play for you all again one day soon" -- signed "Dick'N THE ICU" -- Wagner was in a medically induced coma at the time of his death from respiratory failure.

"Dick Wagner was the consummate gentleman axeman. (He) will be missed," Kiss' Gene Simmons said in a statement on Wednesday, noting that Wagner played the "blistering" guitar solo on the Destroyer track "Sweet Pain." Kiss frontman Paul Stanley had this to say: "Dick was a stellar player and his work with Steve Hunter on Lou Reed's Rock&Roll Animal is legendary. He also did great work with Alice Cooper and uncredited ghosting on Destroyer and albums by some of our contemporaries. A huge talent with a huge tone and huge heart. A great unsung hero."

Eonian Records Announces COLD SHOT August 26

Artist:
Tuesday, August 26, 2014
Categories:
News Feed

Indianapolis, Indiana – Eonian Records is pleased to announce the Self-Titled album release by Los Angeles rockers COLD SHOT, produced and engineered by Mark Eisenstein and Russ Castillo (The Doors, Kansas, Pink Floyd).

COLD SHOT also recently held their album pre-release party, as well as celebrated their 25th Anniversary on Friday, July 25th, 2014 in front of a capacity crowd at Paladino’s in Tarzana, California.

COLD SHOT is:

Adam Murray - Vocals
Anthony Gallo - Guitars
Erin Bartley - Bass
Rikki Baggett - Drums

Like so many good hard rock acts, COLD SHOT was formed in the seething cauldron of excess and decadence that was the L.A. metal scene in 1988. COLD SHOT was a band that came about through pure chance. Guitarist Anthony Gallo had been a part of the L.A. scene for quite some time, his disillusionment growing exponentially by the day. But that all changed when he heard singer/songwriter Adam Murray sing at a show. The power of Adam’s voice destroyed all of Anthony’s disillusionment like a dandelion in a dust storm. Realizing destiny was staring him smack in the face, Anthony vowed right then and there that he and Adam would record music together.

The two became fast friends and quickly formed a band called Shark Team, a name Adam hated right from the start. Eager to get their name - loathed as it might be by his musical partner in crime - out there, Anthony booked a show at Gazzarri's before they even had a bassist or drummer. Luckily it didn’t take long to fill these slots; Erin Bartley answered the ad for the bass player position and recommended his roommate Rikki Baggett for drumming duties.

Adam insisted the group deep-six Shark Team and redub the band COLD SHOT. The name stemmed from a conversation Adam had once had with an elderly coworker in a delicatessen; as Adam shared some of the cruelty his ex had inflicted, the old dude commented, “Man, what a cold shot!” The phrase had stuck in Adam’s mind and he now applied it to their new band.

With the new name came a fresh burst of luck. The band caught the attention of well-known promoter Sam Sarkiss. They had their pictures snapped by legendary photographer Neil Zlozower, Erin and Anthony secured endorsement deals with Renegade Custom Guitars. COLD SHOT headlined and sold out well-known venues on the Sunset Strip in West Hollywood, California such as The Roxy Theatre and Whisky a Go Go on a regular basis. They even recorded two songs - “Juicy Lucy” and “Higher” - for the soundtrack to Brad Pitt’s first indie film, “Across the Tracks,” the latter of which was co-written with Carlos Cavazo of Quiet Riot and Ratt fame.

All this eventually led to a deal offer from Virgin Records, but before anything materialized grunge came along and put the screws to melodic metal. The Sunset Strip was out and Seattle was in. When Tommy Lee shaved his head, that was the last straw, the final nail in the coffin of L.A. metal, and COLD SHOT called it quits.

Now, 20 years after the band laid down their metaphorical guns, their music is being reloaded and ready to roar once again. Yeah, that’s right - COLD SHOT is getting ready to take another shot. Turn the stereo up and prepare to feel the impact as COLD SHOT nails a hard rock bulls-eye right between your ears.

ABOUT EONIAN RECORDS:

Eonian Records believes that good music never dies. Just because a recording resided in a state of dust, decay, and dormancy for the last quarter-century does not automatically mean it should be discarded like an expired condom. If you purchase an album bearing the Eonian logo, you can rest assured that it has never been previously released, that it deserved to be released, and that it has been released with the utmost care and attention to quality.

Founded for no other reason than a love of the genre, Eonian was launched in 2008 as an independent label with the singular goal of serving as hard rock and metal archaeologists digging up unreleased '80s and early '90s recordings and giving them the proper release they were never afforded back in the day.

CELEBRATING JON LORD
the magical night in memory of the great man and musician
featuring

DEEP PURPLE
BRUCE DICKINSON, GLENN HUGHES,
PAUL WELLER, RICK WAKEMAN
and many others

To be released on CD, 2CD, and Digital Formats by earMUSIC / Eagle Rock Entertainment on September 30, 2014

New York, NY (July 29, 2014)—On September 30, 2014, earMusic and Eagle Rock Entertainment will proudly release Jon Lord, Deep Purple & Friends – Celebrating Jon Lord on CD, 2CD, and via digital formats in North America.

It was in 2006 when, once a year, a group of stellar musicians and stars of rock started meeting up in London for a night of live music. The main intent was to raise money for a charity called The Sunflower Jam.

At first the rumors about these sessions with Deep Purple, Robert Plant, Brian May and Alice Cooper were too good to be true, to the point that a few thought that they were nothing less than an urban legend.

"The Jam," as it soon started to be called, quickly became a cult night. A real must -- first for the artists themselves, free and happy to leave their commercial thoughts outside the venue and be able to enjoy playing music together with colleagues, friends and maybe even secret rivals, and for the audience, who often could simply not believe their eyes.

The Sunflower Jam
started as an idea from Jacky Paice, who very often could count on the drumming of her husband Ian. Who would turn down playing with him?

The first editions were mainly open to guests and music business professionals that would contribute to the charity. Later "The Jam" became too good not to be available to the public.

It is in one of the earlier
Sunflower Jams that Jon Lord played for the last time with his friends in Deep Purple, duetting on a peaceful "war of hammonds" with Don Airey, who had replaced Lord in Deep Purple when he decided he had enough of a life spent on the road, and after a lifetime dedicated to rock and roll, Lord left to concentrate on his first love: classical music and the combination of rock elements in it.

2014: "The Sunflower Jam" is a now a regular sold out event, with this fourth one taking place at the Royal Albert Hall.

Jon Lord sadly passed away in 2012, a few weeks prior to the release of the just finished remake of what is universally known as the first ever meeting of classical music and rock: the Concerto For Group and Orchestra. The same composition that Purple played live in 1969 at the Royal Albert Hall.

Considering the amount of respect, friendship and love expressed by anybody who had worked, played or simply met Jon Lord, it is not a surprise that the 2014 Jam would be completely dedicated to his music. The night turned out to be a historical moment in rock music: A full orchestra, led by director Paul Mann, gave wonderful arrangements to this repertoire going back and forth through fifty years of music, performed by many old friends. It was truly an unforgettable night.

The Albert Hall sold out to the last seat...

For four hours Jon’s music was shining. Commotion, jokes, laughs and a lot of music came together by magic.

All the wonderful musicians who played at the "Celebrating Jon Lord" Sunflower Jam have left an indelible mark. The set culminatied in a 45-minute finale by Deep Purple (the Purple Mk III songs played by Paice with old friend Glenn Hughes), who are eventually joined by Iron Maiden's Bruce Dickinson, Rick Wakeman of Yes fame, Steve Balsamo (who sang in the Jon Lord band and on his last studio album Concerto), members of The Temperance Movement, ex-members of Whitesnake Bernie Marsden and Micky Moody, and the "modfather" Paul Weller.

The concert was divided into two acts: “Jon Lord – The Composer,” which focused on his classical music, and “Jon Lord - The Rock Legend,” which focused on his remarkable and revolutionary rock sound. “Jon Lord – The Composer” is featured on the single disc version of Celebrating Jon Lord, while the “Jon Lord – The Rock Legend” segment is featured on the 2CD.

Ian Paice remembers the Celebrating Jon Lord night with vivid memory.  Considering the time all the artists had to rehearse the music for the concert, (in Deep Purple’s case two hours the day before the show!), the resulting performance were nothing less than miraculous. A testament to the quality of the players and love for Jon and his works.

“It was like no concert I have ever played. Everyone in the Hall was there for a common purpose, to honour a wonderful man and a great musician. The Royal Albert Hall is a fairly large venue and can be intimidating, but that evening, it was more like a gathering of friends at their local, (if slightly oversized) pub than a regular show.

I believe all the artists, the people in the audience and even the crew helping to make the show work, felt the difference that night.”

Everybody attending the show left the venue with an expression that clearly said "one day I will be able to say I was there"...

Now everybody will be able to see why.

About The Sunflower Jam

The Sunflower Jam is the brainchild of Jacky Paice, wife of Deep Purple drummer Ian Paice. Founded in 2006, Jacky was inspired to help those fighting cancer and other diseases after meeting a 16-year-old boy named Kevin.

Kevin had Leukaemia and a friend of Jacky’s who headed the complimentary therapy care team at the University College London called her and asked for a favor. Kevin needed a boost to pull him through and, as a Deep Purple fan, he asked Jacky if she would get Ian to sign something and send it to him. Not only did she organize that, but Jacky also called her brother-in-law Jon Lord and asked them both to deliver the signed merchandise.

“When we opened the door to his room, there were Deep Purple posters on the walls and amongst the medical equipment Kevin was laid next to his guitar in bed. The first impression we all got from this boy was how pale he was and I’ll never forget how his cheeks flushed and his eyes lit up with joy when he saw Jon and Ian,” says Jacky.

Unfortunately, Kevin passed away two weeks after Jacky, Ian and Jon visited him in hospital but Jacky’s memory of that boy and the positive effect that their visit had on him never left her. After seeing all the good work that the complimentary care team were doing on the oncology ward and how they were working alongside NHS doctors to provide a complete treatment program for patients, Jacky knew she wanted to raise money to help support the amazing work they were already doing. She has never been able to delete Kevin’s number from her phone.

Since then, Jacky has organized high-profile, classic rock events which, after outgrowing their original venue, have now moved to the Royal Albert Hall and other iconic London venues. The Sunflower Jam also organizes other fundraising activities throughout the country and actively remains committed to engaging and educating people in the discussion surrounding complimentary and integrated treatments.

The Sunflower Jam will donate all royalties out of the CD, DVD and Blu-Ray to The Jon Lord fellowship.

About The Jon Lord Fellowship

Since 2012, The Sunflower Jam have been working closely with the College of Medicine to support the amazing research that they are doing into non-toxic treatments for cancer. Following the sad death of Jon Lord from pancreatic cancer in July 2012, the College of Medicine have set up the Pancreatic Cancer Project sponsored by The Sunflower Jam which includes the development of The Jon Lord Fellowship. The Jon Lord Fellowship will be awarded each year to fund projects that display exciting and innovative approaches to fighting pancreatic cancer. The money will also fund smaller research projects that will make a difference in this field.

Mascot Label Group and Flying Colors have announced a September 29 release date in Europe and the U.K. for the band's SECOND NATURE album via the Music Theories label.

The music press acknowledged the eponymously titled debut album from Flying Colors among the most compelling releases of 2012. Combining the talents including Deep Purple/Dixie Dregs/ex-Kansas guitarist Steve Morse, drummer Mike Portnoy (Transatlantic, Winery Dogs, ex-Dream Theater), Neal Morse (Transatlantic, Spock’s Beard and a prolific solo artist), bass player Dave LaRue (Dixie Dregs, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai and more) with a comparatively new talent, singer/songwriter Casey McPherson, the band mixed virtuoso music with melodic songwriting by crafting new-fashioned music the old-fashioned way.

Executive Producer Bill Evans assembled a team of virtuoso players, a pop singer/songwriter, and the right producer to create sophisticated music that was accessible. Over 100 singer/songwriters were considered for the role. Portnoy pitched the idea of approaching McPherson, a member of the group Alpha Rev, whose 2010 album called ‘New Morning’ dominated the Billboard Top Ten for 17 weeks.

After an hour-long phone call with Evans, the band found their man. As Mike had quite rightly hoped, McPherson went on to prove the ‘X Factor’ that elevated Flying Colors above the norm. "The idea of having an actual singer as opposed to a musician that also sang, really opened up a whole other world," Portnoy told Prog magazine.

Classic Rock magazine hailed the band’s debut as "fearless", praising its "Journey-sized choruses" and referencing artists as diverse as The Beatles, Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Doors, Muse, and even Frank Sinatra.  In late 2012, the band toured America and Europe, dazzling fans with Flying Colors originals and selections from the catalogues of the five members.

Schedules allowing, the protagonists had always viewed Flying Colors as a genuine band as opposed to a side project, hence they began writing a second studio album. From the first writing session to final delivery of the masters in July 2014, the process took almost a year and half, in four distinct stages: writing sessions via Skype in January/February 2013, another burst of writing and recording at Neal Morse’s house in Nashville, a trip to Portnoy’s home that spawned five additional songs, and finally individual recording/arrangement over the internet throughout the spring of 2014.

This time the band opted to self-produce, with Evans, the man responsible for the concept of Flying Colors, reprising his role as Executive Producer and co-engineer. Besides offering a finely tuned set of ears, Evans would remix a track each time an amendment was made, before sending it onto each band member, allowing closer collaboration by the band.  "There was no repudiation of producer Peter Collins," clarifies Evans, "but the guys had become a family and they wanted to try something different."

Sporting stunning artwork from the legendary designer Hugh Syme (Rush, Aerosmith, Def Leppard, Whitesnake) and bookended by two tracks of truly epic stature – ‘Open Up Your Eyes’ and the multiple-part ‘Cosmic Symphony’ – the album is every bit as breathtaking as the debut.  Portnoy stresses that the music’s proggier path was "not conscious at all."

"Direction was never even discussed," continues Portnoy. "We just did what we do. I think perhaps not having a producer to ‘trim the fat’ possibly led to the songs breathing and expanding a bit more."

"This is an album full of many layers," concludes guitarist Steve Morse. "The more you listen, the more you can hear. It’s an album to keep listening to."

Second Nature showcases a compelling and thought-provoking collection of songs written and performed by musicians at the top of their game.

SURVIVOR/IDES OF MARCH FOUNDER JIM PETERIK’S THROUGH THE EYE OF THE TIGER OFFERS AN OVERVIEW OF A MOST UNLIKELY ROCK STAR

~COMING SEPTEMBER 23~

The writer/performer of such classic hits as “Eye of the Tiger” and “Vehicle” reveals his life both on-stage and off, including having a chart hit as a 15-year-old, penning one of the great inspirational anthems of all time and touring with Led Zeppelin, Janis Joplin and the Grateful Dead

New York, NY (July 28, 2014)— You may not recognize the name Jim Peterik, but the songs he’s written have made an indelible mark on pop music history, an incredible first-person tale he relates in his biography, Through the Eye of the Tiger: The Rock ‘n’ Roll Life of Survivor’s Founding Member, published by BenBella Books on September 23.

It’s all here, from his beginnings as a 15-year-old in the Ides of March, which the Illinois native playfully dubs “The Beatles of Berwyn,” scoring a #2 Billboard hit in 1970 with the horn-laden “Vehicle,” to being personally asked by Sylvester Stallone to write a song for Rocky III, which turned out to be “Eye of the Tiger,” the triple-platinum, Grammy-winning inspirational anthem that gives the book its name.

“This is my chance to connect the dots and put a face behind those songs,” says Peterik about writing the book. “I love the past, but I don’t live there. And I’m not ashamed of it, either. I’ll be playing ‘Vehicle’ until the day I die, but I would feel unfulfilled if I wasn’t paying it forward, discovering new talent and writing with my heroes.”

Through the Eye of the Tiger offers a close-up view of the rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle – its pitfalls and triumphs along the way, as Peterik’s anecdotes include The Ides of March touring with Led Zeppelin (opening for them in Winnipeg), Janis Joplin (“I had to walk her home because she was too inebriated to get to her hotel”), the Grateful Dead (“I shared a deli tray with Jerry Garcia without getting dosed”) and the Allman Joys (the predecessor to the Allman Brothers).

It’s also a cautionary tale about the dangers of drugs and groupies, which Peterik carefully avoided during a 42-year (and counting marriage) to his wife Karen, whom he met when he was 17 and she was 15 during a Turtles concert at their high school. The two have a 24-year-old son, Colin, who is a musician himself, which makes Jim one proud father.

“I don’t think I could have written this book 10 years ago,” says Peterik. “I’ve finally reached a point where I see a very bright future for all the things I’m doing, but I can also appreciate what I’ve done. I thought the time was right to tell my story.”

That story includes a personal invitation from Sly Stallone, who left a message on his answering machine to call him, then asked if he’d write a song for Rocky III, which turned into “Eye of the Tiger,” a huge hit still ubiquitous at sporting stadiums and arenas everywhere. “I got the title from what Burgess Meredith tells Rocky in the movie,” says Peterik about the song he co-wrote with Survivor bandmate, guitarist Frank Sullivan, revealing it was the demo that made it into the final movie. “It had the mojo,” he said simply.

A world class tunesmith, Peterik’s songs have sold 30 million around the world, with 18 Top 10 hits, including “Hold on Loosely,” “Caught Up in You,” “Rocking Into the Night,” “Fantasy Girl,” collaborating most recently with Brian Wilson on the title track to the Beach Boys’ acclaimed album, That’s Why God Made the Radio. The artists Peterik has worked with over the years include .38 Special, Sammy Hagar, REO Speedwagon’s Kevin Cronin, Buddy Guy, the Doobie Brothers, Cheap Trick, Night Ranger, Dennis DeYoung, Reba McEntire, David Hasselhoff, Johnny Rivers and Lynyrd Skynyrd.

“I always lived in a creative bubble removed from the business,” he says. “For me the song is the ‘vehicle’… pun intended.  I did everything in the service of the song. It didn’t matter what happened on the bus or in the dressing room. I wanted my message of positivity to survive.”

To that end, Peterik’s first book, Songwriting for Dummies, is a best-seller about his own creative methods, and he travels around the world giving seminars on the subject.

As for his survival, he credits it to never losing his focus. “I’m a late bloomer,” says the 64-year-old. “I’m now the guy with the purple hair, red leather suit and striped guitar. It’s a delayed response to the fact I took a back seat all those years. I’m having the time of my life.

“I do this for the love of music, to hear my God-given voice echo across a filled auditorium.”

Later this year, Peterik will mark the 50th anniversary of his still-active The Ides of March with a deluxe, 70-song, three-disc reissue of the seminal band’s catalog, including a DVD featuring a live concert from Chicago’s House of Blues, Rare footage, interviews with the band and videos of “Vehicle” and “Last Band Standing.”

“Writing this book tore me apart,” he admits. “Going through the good times – those early idyllic years as a teenager with The Ides of March, and then with Survivor, surviving some rough times. It was very painful dredging all that up… the separation from my wife for months at a time, when the loneliness would just grip me, with music my only drug.”

Peterik captures it all in Through the Eye of the Tiger, the memoirs of a true rock ‘n’ roll Survivor.

VEGA - Stereo Messiah (Pre-View)

Fresh from the musical joy that is Work Of Art, I have another album fighting for my attention. British band VEGA is back with their third album “Stereo Messiah”. Oh boy, does this album deliver folks….it delivers BIG TIME!

It looks like the band that serves up tasty melodic rock with a modern twist have bettered both previous efforts to deliver their best album to date. I’m all over this album, with track after track of powerfully delivered, anthemic, melodic bliss, all in a style that really shows that these new bands know how to keep an aging genre alive and fresh.

So right now I’m pretty much on a Work Of Art/Vega playback loop…

What out for the killer tracks Wherever We Are, Neon Heart, With Both Hands, The Wild The Weird The Wonderful – all magnificent melodic rock anthems. But there’s more.

All Or Nothing has to be one of the band’s best songs…Or maybe that accolade goes to the dramatic, moody rocker The Fall…or maybe it’s the breezy anthemic Gonna Need Some Love Tonight.
But then there’s the multi-layered The Ballad Of The Broken Hearted! Only another 100 spins of this album will determine the truth!

The duet with Def Leppard’s Joe Elliott on DL track 10x Bigger Than Love and other songs on Stereo Messiah show that Def Leppard have a successor to their crown biting at their heels.

Mark this one down too folks - VEGA deliver a true highlight of 2014 and any year for fans of pure melodic rock.
If you liked Vega before, you are going to LOVE this one!

Due out October 17.
