Author Greg Renoff has spent the last five years researching and writing Van Halen Rising, which will be published this October by ECW Press.
In the meantime, he's written a Van Halen article for Medium, which has just been published. I'm happy to plug this for Greg. Read below....

The Private Photo Shoot that Sparked a War Inside Van Halen

In 1979 David Lee Roth met Helmut Newton, inciting an ego-fueled power struggle that ultimately split the group apart

Greg Renoff in Cuepoint

Van Halen’s star was on the rise in late 1979. Vocalist David Lee Roth, bassist Michael Anthony, guitarist Eddie Van Halen, and drummer Alex Van Halen had sent sold out crowds into delirium on their wildly successful 1978 and 1979 world tours. They had two platinum albums under their belts, and their latest, Van Halen II, had even cracked the Billboard Top Ten. These were significant achievements for a hard rock band at time when disco and new wave dominated the nation’s airwaves.

VAN HALEN Live Tokyo Dome Set Due March 31 + First 2 Remasters

It's official...

VAN HALEN TO RELEASE DEFINITIVE LIVE ALBUM
— TOKYO DOME LIVE IN CONCERT —
AVAILABLE MARCH 31 ON CD, VINYL AND DIGITAL

Van Halen’s First Six Albums to be Remastered Directly from the Analog Master Recordings and Set for Release in Spring.

LOS ANGELES – Van Halen will release its first-ever live album to feature original singer David Lee Roth. Recorded on June 21, 2013 at the famed Tokyo Dome in Tokyo, Japan. TOKYO DOME LIVE IN CONCERT includes 23 songs, spanning all seven of the band’s albums with Roth. It will be released as a double CD; four-LP set on 180-gram vinyl; and digitally beginning March 31, 2015.

Van Halen reinvented the sound of hard rock in 1978 with its influential and wildly successful eponymous debut album and then achieved ever greater success six years later with 1984.  Both albums would define a generation while selling more than 10 million copies each in the U.S. alone to earn diamond-certification from the RIAA.  The band recently went back to the original analog tapes and remastered both of these landmark albums – Van Halen and 1984 - which are now also set for release on March 31, 2015 through Warner Bros. Records.
Considered one of the greatest debut albums in rock history, Van Halen took the music world by storm in 1978 with an 11-song manifesto that features some of rock radio’s most played songs of all time and scorching concert staples like “Runnin’ With The Devil,” “Ain’t Talkin’ ‘Bout Love,” “Jamie’s Cryin’,” the band’s signature cover of The Kinks’ “You Really Got Me,” and Eddie Van Halen’s finger-tapping tour de force, “Eruption.” Six years and five albums later, Van Halen had become one of the biggest bands in the world around the release of 1984, which includes a number of the band’s most legendary songs such as the #1 hit, “Jump,” “Panama,” and “Hot For Teacher.”

Mastering engineer Chris Bellman, who remastered the original albums at Bernie Grundman Mastering Studios, was enlisted for these new versions. In order to produce the original sound the band intended, Bellman cut straight from the quarter-inch tapes for CD; for 180-gram vinyl; and for the digital versions. Newly mastered versions of Diver Down, Women and Children First, Van Halen II and Fair Warning are now being cut (for CD, for vinyl, and for digital) for release later in spring.

TOKYO DOME LIVE IN CONCERT features an electrifying performance by singer David Lee Roth, guitarist Eddie Van Halen, drummer Alex Van Halen, and bassist Wolfgang Van Halen. Mixed by award-winning engineer and mixer Bob Clearmountain (Rollings Stones, Bruce Springsteen, Roxy Music, Nine Inch Nails, and many more), and mastered by Chris Bellman, the album features such classic anthems as “Dance The Night Away,” “Beautiful Girls,” “And The Cradle Will Rock …” “Unchained,” and “Everybody Wants Some!!” as well as blistering versions of “Tattoo,” “She’s The Woman,” and “China Town” from the group’s most recent studio album, A Different Kind of Truth.

A deluxe collection featuring Tokyo Dome Live In Concert and the newly remastered Van Halen and 1984 albums, as both a four-CD set and a six-LP vinyl set in special packaging, will also be available March 31.

Additionally, www.vhnd.com state that : "This is a VERY authentic live recording. Every bit of the concert is in here, including Dave speaking Japanese to the enthusiastic crowd, full guitar and drum solos, etc. Note there are absolutely NO touchups on the lead vocals, unlike most live albums. They considered using different songs from different shows, but thought it would be better to simply release one stellar performance. They want this one to be authentic!"

VAN HALEN Set To Announce Live 2013 Album

Artist:
Wednesday, February 4, 2015

So what do you makeof this folks? Nothing official just yet, but no denials from VH publicists either.
News of this release came from a leak from Canadian radio station 106.7 The Drive, who posted this on their Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/1067TheDrive?fref=nf

"The song and artwork was serviced to us by Universal Music Canada today. I scoured thru the release, there was no embargo. This is legit."

The album cover and PR scan came from the same source. Check it out:

VAN HALEN - No New Album, But You Can Have...

SECOND UPDATE:

I know I said I was done, but for what it's worth, here's a summary and update of recent VAN HALEN rumor drama.

A good source of mine knows that Eddie & Alex are in final mixing stages of secret project.
We both assume it's a new album.

Upon that news being shot down (by another close friend and the VHND), further digging suggested it was in fact a live DVD.

That is also shot down very swiftly.

But further clarification was sought from the CIA and FBI and I now have news that I believe to be more plausible after update 1 & 2 were dismissed.

If this is accurate - then rumor 1&2 weren't far off the mark. What the upcoming release is in fact a live release - but not a DVD, just an audio only CD release. What Dave era I don't know, but my source suggested it was archival.

Take it or leave it...but I just felt this story was unfinished business for me.

If this is accurate we will know I was on track originally. If not, I'll scratch the source for any future info.

Time will tell if this info stands the test of time :)

UPDATE:

In an arrogant, rude and dismissive post at the VHForums.com, the owner of the VHND (the only site seemingly allowed to report or mention Van Halen info), has again shot down the latest news that Van Halen were in fact working on a live DVD.

Apparently not.

So, they have spent 18 months on a top secret, locked down military project that is neither a new studio album, nor a live DVD.

This is despite the uncontested fact Van Halen brothers have been in mix-down in recent weeks.

He stated “All of this is absolute nuts. You all should know he's been wrong about everything before ADKOT was released, and soon enough you will see that he is wrong on everything he said this year.”

So….with that said…I’m done. You can go to the band’s official site www.-van-halen.com (last updated 18 months ago) or the band’s Facebook page (last updated over 12 months ago).

This has to be the most un-fan friendly band on the planet. They have no grasp of keeping the fan base informed, interacting with anyone on the essential and simple to use social media outlets or anywhere else for that matter.

No wonder fans are left hanging on to nothing but speculation.

Whatever this CIA project is, it was being mixed in recent weeks, so it will be announced whenever they are ready.

Apologies for the apparently misleading news.

VAN HALEN has been keeping a “secret’ project under wraps all year, with fans left to speculate just what that might be.

A couple of weeks back I heard that mixing of this project was well underway in a LA studio with a big name mix specialist.  I automatically assumed it was a new studio album or tracks left over from the A Different Kind Of Truth sessions finally coming to fruition.

But sadly it is not.

Here’s a couple of points I heard back following that report, from my two best, long time sources.

- “There are no plans whatsoever to record a new album.”

And

- “There is no indication that DLR has even been in real contact with the brothers let alone done any recording on "new" songs.”

So just what exactly has Eddie & Alex Van Halen been working on?
Work that I’m told will wrap up this week.

Folks… without any confirmation from the band or anyone official (they never talk…), to the best of my knowledge, it looks like the secret project is an archival Live DVD.

Signs are pointing towards it being a 2008 Madison Square Garden show that was filmed on the night.

Stay tuned…

VAN HALEN Rumored To Be In Mixing Stage For New Album

As has been the case in the past, everything concerning VAN HALEN this year has been shrouded in mystery and secrecy.

But it’s getting close to "go" time again.

I have heard from one of my reliable sources that recording of the new VAN HALEN album is complete and the songs recorded are now in the mixing stage with a well-known big name mixer (more on that soon...).

I’m told that Eddie and Alex Van Halen are the only members present for the mixing stage.

This news ties in with a very similar time frame from 2011, when the band went public in November of that year about their new album A Different Kind Of Truth, which was released in February 2012.

Stay tuned for more!

VAN HALEN Rumored Documentary "Unlikely"

Word spread last week of rumoured secret Van Halen project tied to their new studio album (currently in the works, but with no firm release or completion timeframe).

The rumor alluded to the band preparing a documentary film of the process behind regrouping to record the last record A Different Kind Of Truth and the subsequent tour.

I reached out to my usual Van Halen sources to see if this rumor held any merit and as of right now, the only thing I have uncovered is that such a project is highly unlikely,

According to my long-time trusted source, there was "very little video, if any, shot during the making of the album."

On tour the first leg had "little to no video footage shot", but on the second leg, vocalist David Lee Roth privately had "a guy out on the road shooting lots of video footage."

As a footnote, as we all know, David Lee Roth has been living in Japan for a number of years now and has apparently been getting extensive tattoo work done "on his back and his chest and arms", choosing Japanese masters to do it - nearing close to 200 hours of ink work so far!

35TH ANNIVERSARY OF VAN HALEN II

Dallas, TX - April 29, 2014. North American syndicated Rock radio show and website InTheStudio: The Stories Behind History's Greatest Rock Bands celebrates the 35th anniversary of Van Halen II with a look back at four formative Van Halen albums.
The quintessential American hard rock band Van Halen's 1978 debut all but guaranteed their election to the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame on the first ballot, quickly becoming a benchmark for every hard rock band ever since. Six years later they even topped that with 1984, one of the most popular and influential albums ever. Every one of the four Van Halen albums in between, II, Women and Children First, Fair Warning and Diver Down would all sell millions and each would top its predecessor on the album sales chart.
These early years, although undeniably successful, came with a price, and by 1982 Van Halen had become a series of contradictions: even though selling a million each on Van Halen II and its successors, as well as hundreds of thousands of concert tickets, their record label was concerned over a lack of mainstream hits and a shallow well of songs. Creative frustration along with personal conflicts within the band would eventually lead to a post-David Lee Roth Van Halen.

Alex Van Halen describes to InTheStudio host Redbeard how visceral and primal their creative process was on those formative albums. “When we're in the studio and the amps are cranked to eleven on the dial and you're having a great time playing it, I think that's the one thing you shouldn't forget. We've been looking at songs, how do we write them, how do we come up with the ideas, but once we start playing, it's a perpetual thing.”
Van Halen II /InTheStudio interview is available now to stream at: www.inthestudio.net/redbeards-blog/van-halen-2-35th-anniversary/
