After Eels' triumphant performance at L.A.'s Orpheum Theater last night concluded with a five-song encore, including Nilsson's "Turn on Your Radio," the band was joined by Journey's legendary one-time lead vocalist Steve Perry, who has joined them on several dates of their current tour after decades of avoiding the stage.
The interesting thing about this guy is, he walked away from it all 20 years ago," observed Eels leader Mark Oliver "E" Everett, addressing the crowd from the stage, "and then in Minneapolis, he came back to sing with us. Then he walked away again, and six days later in Washington, D.C., he came back again. And then he walked away again. Ladies and gentlemen, for the first time anywhere in 12 days -- and the first time in L.A. in 20 years -- please welcome Steve Perry!"
"It's been so goddamn long," said Perry to the audience. "I gotta thank the Eels for inviting me out here -- the best band that any singer could want. I met E because of a friend of mine, Patty [Jenkins, director of Monster]. She burnt me a CD of Daisies of the Galaxy, and I told Patty, 'Someday I want to sing that song.'" Then Perry and Eels performed the Eels tune, "It's a Motherf---er." "Steve motherf---in' Perry! He IS a motherf---er," exulted E, who then joined Perry in a superb rendition of Sam Cooke's "Only 16," which morphed into a bit of Journey's "Open Arms."
"Steve, what about trying one you haven't done in a long time?" asked E. "You did that one 11 days ago."

"How about this one?" said Perry. "I wrote this one in LA, then I joined this band called Journey, moved to San Francisco, and we finished it up ithere, and changed 'L.A.' to 'the Bay.'" Dancing like a man at least 20 years younger than his 65 years, Perry rocked out on "Lights (When the Lights Go Down in the City)," nimbly leaping over the microphone cords perilously snaked around the stage, turning his back on the audience to groove with Eels drummer Knuckles (Derek Brown), then facing the audience to hit the high trills flawlessly, yet with a new rasp in his voice sounding just a bit like E himself.
"The 'cit-ee' is L.A.!" shouted E.
"Here's another," said Perry. "I was 18, working as an assistant engineer in a music studio... I'm out of breath! I guess I haven't done this enough lately to get in shape. Anyway, I was 18, and this girl pulls up in a Corvette with a guy, and they were mackin' it up -- tongue and shit! She denied it. So I wrote a song about it, and it went like this." Perry then launched into "Lovin' Touchin' Squeezin'," putting his hand to his ear to make the audience sing along (rather well) with the "na na na na" chorus. When he hit the high notes, he sounded like Minnie Riperton on testosterone.
At a party after the show, Knuckles said, "We've been bugging him to perform for years. He came to our rehearsals, we'd play a Journey song, and he'd say, 'Oh, guys, I'm not gonna do that.' He's a sweet guy we're happy to play with, not just because he's Steve Perry, but also 'cause he's a buddy."
"He does 'It's a Motherf---er' completely different," said E. "When I sing it without him, I feel like I'm just like basically talking."
"Listen, I've done the 20-year hermit thing, and it's overrated," said Perry. "Why now? It's a long story, but it has to do with a lot of changes in my life, including losing my girlfriend a year ago, and her wish to hear me sing again." Writer Joel Stein, who plays croquet with Perry and Eels, said, "I know she had cancer."
Jon Hamm, a friend of Eels, said, "You've got to remember, Steve's in his 60s -- it's a pretty impressive performance. It was really nice to hear that voice again."
"When he sang 'Only 16,' the hairs stood up on my head," said Eels guitarist and trumpet player P-Boo (Mike Sawitzke). "He sounds better with a rasp, more mature and grown-up."
But all members of Eels' croquet circle urge the public to stop believing in Perry as a croquet player. "He was bad," said Stein. "His croquet nickname was 'Hacksaw' or 'Chainsaw.'"
As an Eels singer, however, Perry shows distinct promise. "I passed the audition!" he said.
After a hiatus of 11 years, Dakota is back in the studio recording a brand new album, titled 'The Long Road Home'. Original band members Jerry Hludzik and Bill Kelly has joined up with John Lorance, Eli Hludzik and various guest artists to record the new album at SI Studios, Pennsylvania. Two years in the making, 'The Long Road Home' is a culmination of countless hours of work and passion poured into a project that is close to the band's heart. The last few tracks are currently being completed and final mix and master will follow within the next month or two. Attention Bombay Black fans- today we would like to announce that we are saying good-bye to our "Beast". Original drummer Rob McCauley is retiring from life on the road with Bombay Black. With his oldest son making quite a name for himself on the national BMX race circuit, along with running his many business ventures, he has decided to concentrate his efforts toward his family. As much as we will miss him, Rob races BMX as well so we still get to watch him kick some ass - but now on the track instead of the stage. We wish him the best and hope that you will all take the time to do the same. Don't be surprised to see Rob hanging out with the band at the occasional tour stop. (He still knows how to parallel park that tour bus better than any of our regular pack of drivers.)
As you can imagine, finding a replacement was not easy. Enter Barry Whaley. With over twenty years experience swinging sticks Barry has played on over 2 dozen different projects as a studio musician and has toured with several bands including Burning Cold, Lost And Labeled and Freakshow. Welcome Barry to the Bombay Black family and come meet him on tour this summer. Things are really starting to heat up in the Bombay Black camp, the new album Walk Of Shame will be going on pre sale Monday June 23rd. Norway's Valerie are set to release "Dangerous" EP on June 16
On June 16, Valerie are releasing their brand new EP "Dangerous", which will be available for purchase through www.valerie.no, www.facebook.com/valerieband, iTunes, Amazon, CDBaby among others. And is now available for pre-order.
The EP, which is limited to 500 copies only, consists of the AOR-driven single Night After Night along unreleased Hearts On the Line and the title track Dangerous. Two tracks that will not be featured on Valerie's upcoming second album, which is set to be released later this year.
"Dangerous" offers punch, big hair, melody and hard rocking guitars that may just be the coolest thing coming out of Norway this year. And according to Mosvhille Times "Valerie are doing a damn good job in making sure this genre lives on!"
Valerie formed in Arendal, a small town in southern Norway, in 2011. Known for their big sing-along choruses, old-skool vibe and hooks, Valerie are often compared to infamous 80s rock bands like Ratt and Dokken, or even Danger Danger. Their fist album was released in June 2012 though Hellish Records, and according to Hard Rock Haven's Mark Allen " [Valerie] sounds like hair metal, looks like hair metal, and is possessed by the same pop-metal spirit that defined the burgeoning Sunset Strip scene back in the 80s.

Metal guitar virtuoso, Xander Demos has begun recording a new "solo" mostly instrumental album. The newly titled Runways And Waterways is the follow-up to his critically acclaimed debut album, Guitarcadia. A late 2014 release is expected.
June 11, 2014 - PITTSBURGH, PA. -- Metal guitar virtuoso, Xander Demos, best known for his work with James Rivera's Sabbath Judas Sabbath and his own debut collection of guitar gymnastic "Master-shreds," Guitarcadia, has begun recording his much-anticipated "solo" follow-up release to that album. Like Guitarcadia, the newly titled, Runways and Waterways (formerly referred to as The Runway Obsession) will be a collection of 10 tracks, including two vocal tracks and two cover songs. A late 2014 release is expected.
Xander issued this statement a couple of days ago: "It's June 9th and this is the official announcement: My second solo record is underway as of today. The follow-up to my Guitarcadia album is called Runways and Waterways and it will follow a similar pattern to my first CD. One of the first tracks is getting it's rhythm tracks done right now... sooo, I'm marking this day as "Day 1"... I guarantee it won't take as long as Guitarcadia did, but it will feature some really cool songs and great guests. In the words of the Joker... "and here we................go!"
Meanwhile, Xander and his band, XDB are in the midst of recording their first "band" project, Dancing Through Daggers. The band is opening for metal legends, Stryper on June 12th, in Pittsburgh. XDB will be performing at Skull Fest and Rock N' Skull, where they will also be backing Shawn Pelata (Line of Fire) and John Elefante (Kansas.) Xander is also
continuing his busy press blitz.

MOTORHEAD TO REISSUE 21ST STUDIO ALBUM 'AFTERSHOCK' WITH LIVE BONUS DISC ON 7/29
June 11th 2014 - Iconic hard rock band Mot'rhead will reissue it's 21st studio album 'Aftershock' via UDR/Mot'rhead Music on July 29th in North America under the title 'Aftershock - Tour Edition'. The album was produced by longtime producer Cameron Webb (Megadeth, Disturbed). The expanded edition will contain a Bonus Live CD (also recorded by Webb), consisting of live material comprised from the band's historic appearances in early 2014.
In further celebration of the reissue, UDR/Mot'rhead Music will be releasing a video for the song "Lost Woman Blues" filmed live from The Warfield in San Francisco on Friday April 18th, 2014. The show was part of the band's warm-up mini tour for the upcoming European festivals. The song's performance, verve, swagger and attitude show Mot'rhead have maintained their rich ripeness and added another layer of grit and polish. RIK PRIEM's PRIME present 'Babylon Rising', the first video taken from their brand new debut album
Belgian guitar player Rik Priem and his high profile band have completed the work on their debut video for the stomping Heavy Rocker 'Babylon Rising'.
The song is taken from the bands self-titled debut album, which was released on May 23rd 2014 on CD and as digital download through Avenue Of Allies.
Rik invited his band mates Carsten 'Lizard' Schulz (lead vocals), Vincent De Laat (bass), Geert Margodt (keyboards) and Rami Ali (drums) to his home country Belgium,
where the video was shot at the B52 Club in Eernegem in May 2014 with the help of Andy Maelstaf, Daniel Winne and Steve Claeys.

Swedish heavy metal band OVERDRIVE celebrate the 30 year anniversary of second album 'Swords And Axes'. The band played the Muskelrock Festival last month and will now bring the weapons to Japan! Two shows have been booked, at Birth Shinjuku in Tokyo on August 15 and Club Zeela in Osaka on August 17. More shows in Sweden are also currently being booked. - It's funny, playing in Japan was always one of our goals back in the eighties, and now, thirty years later, we're finally playing there, says guitarist Janne Stark.
The band, formed in 1980, still features four of the five original members. However, original singer Pelle Thuresson is now handling the bass, while the the band's lead singer, Per Lengstedt (Portrait, ex-Unchained) joined in 2003. To commemorate the anniversary the band plays mostly material from the first two albums, and Pelle does share some of the lead vocal duties with Per handling the bass. OVERDRIVE released one EP and two albums before disbanding in 1985. After the re-union in 2003 the band has made several releases such as 'Ressurected', 'Let The Metal Do The Talking' and 'Angelmaker'. Meanwhile, Xander and his band, XDB are in the midst of recording their first "band" project, Dancing Through Daggers. The band is opening for metal legends, Stryper on June 12th, in Pittsburgh. XDB will be performing at Skull Fest and Rock N' Skull, where they will also be backing Shawn Pelata (Line of Fire) and John Elefante (Kansas.) Xander is also
