Buried in the Turkish Delight string below, Ydde posted a link to news about new limitations on Amazon Music users. As someone who spent 10+ years buying music almost exclusively from Amazon, I found this so outrageous that I thought it deserves its own discussion.
For those who didn't follow the link, here's the gist: Effective immediately, anyone who listens to music on the Amazon Music app can only listen to their albums and playlists (a) on shuffle play, (b) with other "similar" songs added into the mix and (c) with limited opportunities to hit the skip button. This applies
even if you have already paid for and downloaded the tracks, unless you unlock your freedom by purchasing an Amazon Unlimited subscription.
To confirm that this was accurate, I opened up my Amazon Music app and randomly selected the Hot Streak album by the Winery Dogs. Each track had the crossed-arrow "shuffle" icon next to it, and no simple "play" icon. I selected Oblivion and the app played Captain Love.
The Good News: If you have downloaded the tracks and use a different app, you can still play your albums intact. I use Musicolet on my phone and the Sonos controller on my PC. Open the Hot Streak album, hit Oblivion and the app plays Oblivion, followed by the remaining songs in order. I can skip back and forth as I choose.
The Bad News:I don't need to go on at length on how the consumer gets screwed by this. I'm a lawyer and I understand the difference between a purchase and a license, but this is clearly theft. Anyone who relies on streaming now has to pay more to hear the music they already paid for.
What bothers me more is that this is another nail in the coffin of the album-as-art-form. I'm fairly certain that Styx wanted me to listen to The Mission in order from start to end. Now I can't do that using the very app that I used to purchase the album. Artists put a lot of time into the sequencing of their albums and we spend lots of time on this board discussing it; this is no longer a worthwhile conversation in Amazon's eyes.
And then there are those songs that are technically more than one track; Amazon Music users will no longer be able to listen to those together. Some that immediately come to mind are:
- AD 1928/Rockin The Paradise
- We Will Rock You/We Are The Champions
- Brain Damage/Eclipse
- The entire second half of Abbey Road
This is indeed good news for those who always thought The End should come at the beginning, or perhaps between Mean Mr. Mustard and Polythene Pam.
I know there are a handful of recording artists who post on the board, I'd be curious to hear their thoughts on this.
