Randy Castillo

RIP - 26 March 2002

Randy - thank you for being the backbone to some incredible albums over the years. RIP.
To Randy's family and friends, my personal regards and condolences to you. The thoughts of all melodicrock.com's readers are with you.

To Randy's family & friends; These kind people would like to say...

05/12/09: Mike Fortuna - stickyhobo27@aim.com
Well I stumbled upon this site well looking for what kind of cymbals Randy used, and might I say after reading all of these comments I am truly touched by how high in respect his friends and family held him. He must have been a great, down to earth man. I am only 16 and never had the opportunity to see him live. His playing style has influenced my drumming greatly. My friends sometimes mock me because "Mike just loves his hair metal," but to me it doesnt matter. Randy's style and just the show he puts on (I've seen videos on youtube) are amazing and filled with soul. I only hope that you would be proud of my playing. You will forever be my greatest influence. Rest in peace Randy. I will see you on the other side.
- with all respect and love
Mike Fortuna

I USED TO GO TO THE NITE TRAIN IN TUCSON ARIZONA. THE >HOUSE BAND> WAS THE WOMBLIES. I PROBABLY SAW HIM PERFORM MANY MANY TIMES THERE, POSSIBLY SPOKE TO HIM MANY TIMES. BEING YOUNG AND DUMB, I WAS IMPRESSED WITH ALL THE MEMBERS, BUT RETAINED LITTLE OF THEIR PERSONALITIES. BUT,,,,, THEIR MEMORY HAS STAYED WITH ME FOREVER. THERE MUST HAVE BEEN SOMETHING THERE

I am heartbroken about passing one of my dearest friends. I will see You at the other side. I love You Randy, Boris

When growing up and learning to play I used to watch "the ultimate Ozzy" video over and over again. Randy's playing style is my biggest influence (even now!).

Miss you bud!

I used to see Randy with the Wumblies in the '70s at the Godfather and Mr. Luckys. Too bad they never made it. I still have some of their tune swirling in my head. GREAT BAND and Drummer-both or them; Randy and that little monkey doll with the cymbals he used wind up. Very cool.

18/11/06: Todd Roberts - ptflroberts@centurytel.net
Randy was very instrumental in following the likes of
Bill Ward, John Bonham, and other great "Time Keepers" in shaping Heavy Metal as we know it today. I saw Randy with Ozzy and Sabbath several times during the mid to late 90's; Randy was as much to Ozzy as Ozzy is to us. I beleive Randy will be forever heralded as the greatest Metal drummer ever. R.I.P. We'll all be together one day...

11/10/06: Seemeterryg - seemeterryg3@sbcglobal.net
It's been a big loss of one of the greatest drummers of all time. I'm glad I had the chance to see him "LIVE"

31/07/06: Tony - oviedotony@yahoo.com
I'm like many other fans that just recently learned about Randy's death. I'm still in shock of his passing. I look back at all the great drumming he contributed to Ozzy's band. I'm also very impressed with his work with Motley Crue's New tattoo album(a very underrated album). But I now realize rock/metal drumming will not be the same without him. wish ya well on the other side Randy!

19/07/06: Jim - jlittle@salud.unm.edu
I first saw Randy drum in the late 60's at a local band tour in Alamogordo, New Mexico when he played with an Albuquerque band called the Womblies. His talent was so far beyond everyone else in the tour....unbelievable. I was only 11 or 12 but, even close to 40 years later, and after seeing countless bands play (Led Zep, the Who, Stones, ELP...REM, Black Crowes etc etc etc)....I've yet to see a drummer match Mr. Castillo for style and flare.

Growing up, listening to Ozzy Osbourne material, I always felt somehow, that certain band members should have stayed with Ozzy for more than one album until Randy joinded him. I guess he had somethng that other did not hae since he stuck around for several albums along with their World Tours. I mean, the guy was great, gave the Crue's a different sound, very solid and very clean.

Just think about his Ozzy years and the part in "Mamma I'm coming home" from the No more tears album. On this album, there are some serious drum parts. He was as important on any of Ozzy's solo albums as John Bonham was with Led Zeppelin. He did not just make noise, he was actually making his drums talk. Amen!

Randy gave the music his all-all the time. I remember sharing the stage with him for three or for nights at The Night Train in Tucson; Randy was with the Wumblies then and I was drumming with another band, and we were alternating sets so I got to spend a lot of time hanging with Randy. He was one of the nicest people I've ever met, and his drumming was unparalleled. I'm just now hearing of his passing and I am truly saddened. My sincere condolences to the Castillo family. Peace, Randy.

23/11/05: JOHN MORA - johnstryper@yahoo.com

If you were not a drummer Randy Castillo inspired you to be one. Randy was a hero and friend all rolled into one. I met Randy in the late 70's Wumblies "Rock America Tour", and remained devoted friends throughout the years...he never forgot who his friends were and his generosity was second to none... Thank you Randy for everything you gave, and I don't know that we can ever repay you...just that you remain in our hearts forever. You are always # 1 Randy. I saw Randy with Ozzy in '96. Randy went off on the tiny tom-toms for just a few seconds during his solo. His hands became a blurr. What in the heck? I've never heard anybody play drums that quickly. It's still insane to me. At that moment Randy became one of my favorite drummers. Nuff said!
You didn't know me Randy, but I knew you, and you were a skin-banging Bad-Ass! Love.....

What can I say? One of the true "Brothers" of Rock And Roll is gone. . .There's a very select few musicians out there, who spend their time as "studio musicians" and actually achieve star status. .Randy is one of those few. . . Randy was especially unique, in that his name showed up on so many different artists, that to credit just one of the performers he worked with, would really do him an injustice. . .

Yet, it's easy to call Randy, "The drummer for Ozzy." He really was great with Ozzy, no doubt. . . But how about Lita Ford?. . Or as a member of Vince Neil's solo band? I saw that tour, and Randy got as much applause as Vince did, upon his introduction. .

He's about the only drummer who can take another drummers place, and no one gives him flack. . Hey, who ever said that Randy wasn't a hell of a replacement for Tommy Lee??

Randy was in a class all of his own. . His contributions will be missed, and his attitude, so positive. . One of the truly coolest sticksmen out there. . . I'm glad I witnessed it for myself. . .

We'll miss ya Randy!

Mike - Kansas City

I think back to all the cassettes I bought in my childhood and as I listened to them, I basically worshipped the ground these guys walked on. These guys were my idols and it really hits me when I hear of any of them passing away. They seem so much larger than life and as if nothing could touch them. They were all just ordinary people doing what they loved and they were actually the ones who touched us. They leave behind a legacy of music and a tale of doing what you love most. Every year it seems as if God is building his own great rock show up there as he invites different musicians up to play with him. Randy Castillo, Robbin Crosby, Eric Carr, Freddie Mercury, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Randy Rhoads, just to name a few. It's sad to see them go, but I guess when my time comes, I'll have one hell of an allstar concert to see up there. I hope all is well with them all and I thank you all for a great childhood full of music and videos. You will not be forgotten. Rock The Heavens!

One of the best rock drummers ever! To me he was right up there with the great John Bonham. Randy will be missed!!!! I remember when I saw Lita Ford's video Gotta Let Go for the first time. The first thing to really catch my attention was the drumming. I thought wow, this cat is great. Little did I know that his best was yet to come. Even though I never met the man I know we shared a common bond, Rock N' Roll!!! I'm not really an emotional type of person but I shed some tears when I heard of his passing. Rock N'Roll has lost one of it's truely great performers. Thanks for the good times!, past, present and future. Rest In Peace.

An exceptionally talented drummer who rocked my world. Condolences to Randy's family and close friends. Thunderstorms will now take a new shape with Randy joining Cozy to light up the sky.

31/03/02: Buffi - Bufster@aol.com
Another lifetime ago - before he made his move to L.A. - Randy Castillo was my friend. He was an awesome drummer back then. He was also one of the nicest people I knew. All the descriptions of Randy that I have read here on this board were all just as true of him back then. He was every bit as good a person as he was a talented musician. Back then there weren't too many female members of road crews. Randy and I and many mutual friends and I worked with his band on a few occasions. He never treated me with anything but respect and was a giving and loyal friend. I'm sorry that we lost touch over the years, such is life. Recently, thanks to the kindness of a stranger, I had been in touch with him again. I am grateful to have been able to tell him that I have always remembered him with fondness over the years. That I heard him live again with Ozzy and he was still one of the best drummers in the business. That he has been in my thoughts and prayers.

Now Randy's mom, sisters and friends are in my thoughts and prayers as well. I am grateful for an all too short friendship with many happy memories - always the music, but moreso the man.
Thank you, Randy. Rest peacefully there. We will miss you here.
In the Buff......

31/03/02: AL - HAWGWILD72@AOL.COM
These days when good musicians are far and few between, we hate to lose one more. I remember seeing Randy playing drums for OZZY on the Ultimate Sin tour. The first drummer I ever seen play a drum solo walking around and playing on the outside of his drums. Although I'm a singer, Randy showed me that there has to be an element of suprise and to go that extra mile to entertain an audience. I thank him for that. If there are drums in heaven, we all know who's behind the kit. RIP Randy.

Each and everytime his absence and your sadness are overwhelming over you, listen to one of his songs, close your eyes and remember that he did what he loved all his life and that is playing metal to entertain millions of fans all over the world.

I admire his intensity on stage, that shows how passionate he was playing his drum.

I first heard Randy's drumming on Lita Ford's Dancin on the Edge. Thought it was cool. But once I heard Ultimate Sin, I was hooked. I loved his playing on the CD. I became a big fan of his style. I got to see him live twice while playing with Ozzy. To keep this short: Randy, you were a big inspiration for me. You were one of my drum heroes. May you rest in Peace. You are in a far better place now. I hope you can hook up with Randy Rhoads up in the heavens and jam on some Ozzy tunes. You are wearing the halo now. God Bless.

Randy was very candid about discussing this horrible disease, and he taught us through interviews and such that if we ever notice a lump or lesion to immediately go and seek medical help. The longer the wait, the worse it can get. He will end up saving many lives with his advice and story.

He is sadly missed. I got out of work monday morning and went online only find out this sad news of his passing. I was fortunate to have met him one time when he and Geezer Butler got off a Bus at the Centrum in Worcester Massachusetts and I told him That I had seen him their on the Ultimate Sin Tour in 86 and loved his Drum solo that he did that night. He thanked me for the comment and signed my cd. He kicked ass that night as well with Ozzy and Geezer and bought back the vibe of that night in 86 for me. My friend and I had tickets to see Motley Crue but after finding out he was sick and would not be there out of respect for him we sold our tickets and did not attend the show. It would not of been the same seeing that show with out him there. This for me will take time to get over. He meant so much to me and will live in my heart and memories for ever. He left all his fan's a gift his music and threw his music from all his years of hard work giving all he had in his playing drums we can listen and think of the good times. Thank you Randy for everything someday I will see you again. You still live we just have to listen....................Peace my Brother

'No Rest For The Wicked' - one of my top-three Ozzy albums. What a team he had back then - Ozzy, Bob Daisley, Zakk Wylde and Randy Castillo. It was his last great solo band. Ozzy didn't need ouside songwriters with these guys - and Randy co-wrote all but 2 tracks on that AMAZING album.

Rock on brother!!!

30/03/02: Pat Kelly - Flames89@hotmail.com
Randy has always been one of my favorite musicians ever since his days with Lita Ford way back when. He played on some of my favorite and most meaningful songs. I was fortunate enough to see him perform with two of my other favorites in Ozzy and Vince Neil, and I will always remember those shows. He was always one of the good guys in rock, you never heard a bad word about him and everyone always wanted to work with him. Rest in peace my friend, see you on the other side.

I had the pleasure of befriending Randy over the last 12 years (I met him when I was publishing a drummer's magazine). He was always full of great stories and priceless jokes... and he always had praise for other drummers in the industry. Underneath the "rowdy LA-style" was a sentimental and soft hearted soul. I enjoyed his playing very much, but I enjoyed his friendship even more. God bless you, Randy...

29/03/02: Frankie Banali - FBanali@aol.com
Just a note to say how sorry I am to hear of Randy's passing. He was one of the few truly nice persons in the music business, and a wonderful drummer.

I met Randy in 1980 while we were both playing in various bands in Hollywood, especially at the Starwood. In all of the twenty-two years that passed, not once did I ever hear him say anything bad about anyone, and he never lost his enthusiasm when talking drums.

Each time we would run into each other, the conversation quickly turned to drums. What snare drums we liked, what microphones sounded best, and of course, how to get that Bonham kick drum sound. I'd like to think that Randy is up in Heaven trading 8's with John Bonham, Buddy Rich, Gene Krupa, and Tony Williams. I'm sure he's holding his own and showing them a trick or two.

May God Bless him and keep him in his light, and may his family find comfort in knowing that there is a new angel in heaven and his name is Randy Castillo.

Sincerely,
Frankie Banali
QUIET RIOT

This was truly a day of darkness for me and millions of rock fans all over the world.
I grew up with all thees brilliant recordings this man was involved in and now I cant feel anything but sorrow and despair.
But like my father always told me when i was a kid, Son, you go right ahead and buy that record because unlike many other things music lasts forever.
So with thees words I would like to say goodbye to a man that I of course never knew or even met, But has always been and always will be like a god to me. I`ll never forget you Randy...

Randy was the first drum clinic I ever attended about 15 years ago in San Francisco. I was about 16 at the time and watching Randy's impressive chops was very inspiring. I had an opportunity to meet him after the clinic to thank him for this great learning opportunity and found that he was very kind and gracious. I still have the picture he autographed and will remember him fondly.

Randy was too young to leave this world of ours and he will be sorely missed, however he will live forever through the spirit of his music. Rest in peace Randy.

Just the other day I was listening to Randy's little known Red Square Black cd and thinking, man that Castillo can play! Even back in the day when I saw him drumming for Lita Ford, I was struck but his dexterity and powerful playing. Over the years he has gone on to become one of rock's most respected drummers and playing on a fistful of classic albums.
Now he's gone and I for one am saddened 'cause he was one of lives stand up guys.
Rest easy Randy.

A great drummer and a true gentleman. In gathering interviews for our Ozzy book it soon became clear that Randy's fellow band members held him in the highest regard both as an accomplished musician and a loyal friend. Randy's passing came as a shock, his last communicaton to me indicated he thought he might have beaten it. A very sad day but hold onto the fact that God's rhythm section just got ten times louder! Peace Randy.

I always enjoyed seeing Randy play. He always seemed to be enjoying himself as he banged the skins (always taking times between beats to knock his own forehead). He was a very special part of the Phenominal touring band that Ozzy had when I saw them in 1991. I will never forget his playing and his ability to entertain. God Bless Randy and his family.

To the Castillo family;
It was '86 or '87 when I first heard of Randy. Still to this day the bass drum kick off of "The Ultimate Sin" is one of the most powerful kicks I have ever heard. I also had the chance to see Randy on tour that year. From that moment on I knew who my main influence on play drums would be. I am and will always be sadend by your loss, and, I will also feel very lucky to have been influenced by such a wonderful person.THANKS RANDY FOR BEING A SOLID GROOVE FOR SO MANY YEARS. You have left this world far too soon, but your memory and legacy will live on, with every drum lick that is played.
