19/11/06: ROY IS THE BEST - dody_karam@hotmail.com
ROY ORBISON is the greatest rock singer of all time.He had an UNEARTHLY voice. Let's see what other legends said about his voice:
1-Elvis Presley called Orbison "the greatest singer in the world."
2-Barry Gibb of the Bee Gees referred to him as the "Voice of God"
3-Bob Dylan about him: He sang his compositions in three or four octaves that made you want to drive your car over a cliff. His voice could jar a corpse, always leave you muttering to yourself something like, 'Man, I don't believe it.'
He adds: "Roy was an opera singer. He had the greatest voice."
4-Mick Jagger: "From watching Roy, I learned how to sing a dramatic ballad."
5-George Harrison: "Roy's voice just came through the radio and touched part of you that other people's didn't reach."

In the end, I'd like to suggest some songs which give a glimpse of his vocal incredible talents:

-It's Over
-In Dreams
-Running Scared
-I drove all night
-You got it
...and of course: - Crying

Let me first say that anyone with Hagar in their list needs to have their ears checked. Immediately.

Now then...this is hard to do, so I am going to throw names out there b/c there is no way to rank them...due to different styles of rock. Thus, those that cannot be overlooked are:

Blues Rock--Paul Rodgers (Bad Co, Free, The Firm, Queen + Paul Rodgers)...there truly is no white man with more soul / vocal inflection than Paul

Southern Rock--Ronnie Van Zant (Lynyrd Skynyrd)...not much else to say here--the clearcut choice

Stadium Rock--Freddie Mercury (Queen)...again, the voice speaks for itself

Modern Rock--Matt Bellamy (Muse)...if you haven't heard of this band, I suggest you do. Finally some people with rock talent.

Other Rock Vocalists-- Ian Gillan (Deep Purple)...simply can't overlook him
Steve Perry (Journey)....good...and at times, psychotic
Robert Plant (Zeppelin)...not much more can be said
Brad Delp (Boston)...anyone who has seen them live knows that he basically does ALL of the vocals for this band

And that's it.

23/05/06: Patrick A. Gallimore - pagalley@hotmail.com
The world's best male vocalist of the 20th century is RUSSELL HITCHCOCK - from Australia - who is the lead singer of arguably the best soft rock group of the latter half of the 20th century, AIR SUPPLY. The tone and vocal range of Hitchcock's magnificent voice are unmatched. Russell's voice is to music what Rolls Royce is to cars. Graham Russell, the other half of the Air Supply duo, is a magnificent songwriter and guitar player.

16/05/06: Patrick Gallimore - pagalley@hotmail.com
I think the top 5 greatest vocalists of the 20th century, in descending order of greatness, are : (1) Russell Hitchcock (Air Supply) : His voice is the most pure, smooth and beautiful that I have ever heard. He also hits every note of every love song he sings, with perfection. Additionally, his 5 1/2 octave range puts him in a class by himself; (2) Celine Dion : Arguably, the best female vocalist of the 20th century. The sound of her amazing voice, her spectacular vocal range and her delivery of love songs, combined, places her above her peers; (3) Neil Diamond : His amazing voice has a dramatic quality to it and possesses a rare mystique that touches the soul; (4) Johnny Mathis : His beautiful voice has an enchanting quality about it that soothes and captivates the listener from start to finish - with each and every love song that he sings; (5) Michael Jackson : His voice has a magical, innocent and hypnotic quality to it that seduces the listener. He puts more emotion and feeling into his songs, particularly his love songs, than any other singer I have ever heard. Michael not only sings the song, he becomes the song.

Ok this is favorite vocalists? Well I will not post my fav, I'll post the top 5 greatest rock vocalists (I will exclude Soul vocalists to make it easier to do), and here they are:
1. Freddie Mercury - Almost unmatched control of his voice, amazing power, one of the largest proven ranges of all rock vocalists, an amazing versatility with over 30 genres, and an extremely influential, emotional and unique vocalist.
2. Jeff Buckley - only about 5 people here have mentioned him, I am surprised. He was a virtuoso, amazing control, very large range, extremely versatile and influential. His voice is rather thin, but that is his only weakness.
3. Ian Gillan - One of the most powerful voices in rock, and Pavarotti's favorite singer, Ian Gillan is the first rock falsetto screamer. Largest proven range in rock (4.5 octaves), fairly good versatility, tons of influence, incredibly unique singer. His voice was so powerful, that Tony Iommi said they hardly needed mics with him.
4. Chris Cornell - Very important singer, one of rocks' best wailers. Amazing power, too bad his prime lasted so little.
5. Robert Plant - Old Rob, singer of Zeppelin, one of the most original and influential singers of our generation. Good range (though not as great as any of the above), excellent power in his higher register. In his prime, this guy was unbelievable.

Then people like Steve Perry, Geoff Tate, Rob Halford, Bruce Dickinson, etc. would come.

08/03/06: Danny - Dannymaxpower17@hotmail.com
1) Paul Rodgers (Free, Bad Co, Solo, and now with Queen, amazing)
2) Axl Rose (Great range, shame hes' a tit)
3) Freddie Mercury (Greatest showman of all time, my opinion)
4) Robert Plant (Great singer with the greatest rock band ever)
5) Bon Jovi (Powerful voice in 80's, lost it a bit now)

BEST VOCALISTS!!!

1. Steve Perry-Unbelievable voice. Great range, great texture, great power, great expressiveness. It made some very cheesy lyrics and a lot of Journey at their worst sound great.
2. Chris Cornell-I can't believe more people haven't really recognized this. A VERY, VERY gifted singer. Lyrics a little muddled, music a little juvenile and dark, but the voice is always mystifying. He could sing anything if he wanted.
3. Phil Collins-Well, he's a really good musician. Great drummer. Very clear, very distinctive vocals. Adult artsy brit rock I know, but that voice, I can't get it out of my head. Technically a very good voice.
4. Sam Cooke-Wow, what can you say about sucha master of his craft. Truly gifted, one in a million type of singer. Great vocal engine, great timbre, great soul. Extreme vocal talent.

That's all I can think of for now.

Who ever put C.J from Firehouse as number one needs to hear that live version of "All She Wrote", downloadable from their website. He's got a good studio voice, but otherwise he's fodder!

1. Miljenko/Michael Matijevic (Mikey Steel)(Steelheart) - He has a range like none over, he can hit notes that don't even appear on a piano. I've heard him on albums AND live, and he is amazing in BOTH. In fact, live he sang "She's Gone" even higher at some points than the studio version, he's an amazing singer, the greatest!

2. Geoff Tate (Queensr˙che) - Well once again, a great range, and this guy really can wail (Queen of the Reich anybody?), once again, live and in the studio.

3. Rob Halford (Judas Priest) (Solo) - Well...I've never actually heard much of his work, but he seems to be a guy coming up in lists again and again, so I figure hey! he must be good!

4. Sebastian Bach (Skid Row) (Solo) - Well when you need some smoothness to a voice, this is the way to go! He's got a nice smooth voice and when he wails, he wails.

5. No idea!

Hey,I download all my songs for free using Sherazza.
It's got all the old classic music you have always wanted to
buy. I think I have about 4 gigs of mp3 in my hard drive.
I rarely use my yahoo account, dude. Save your money.
I have also downloaded Movies or tv shows using Sherazza.
You have to set the firewall properly or you won't be able to download jack. So, I think I have saved around $700+.
Who cares about the Music store? Walk away from them and do Sherazza baby.

5 is such a small number, I couldn't stop myself before 20. The first 5 are in order, the rest fluctuate up and down.

1. GEOFF TATE - My man I am just going to leave it as this, He
speaks to me, sprirtually, morally and creatively.
2. Prince - simply put, musical genius. Setting aside the fact
that on many occasions he played every instrument on his
recordings, also consider that he does all the voices,
layering his voice over itself over and over again, truly
gifted.
3. Robert Plant - During the height of Zeppelin's popularity
(before the tragic end) Robert Plant set the standard for
cool. Nobody looked cooler, nobady sounded cooler, and
nobody wrote cooler songs. Truly a one of a kind.
4. Pink - I love this chic, and what a fabulous voice.
5. Elvis Presley - have to give it up for the 1st white man to
dig from deep within to sing with soul and emotion.
6. Ann Wilson - wow this woman can belt. "Sing it girl!"
7. Scott Weiland - Mmmmm from subtle, tranquil, smooth to raw,
raunchy, and definitely sexy. He just sounds good.
8. Bjork - simply wonderfully amazing, cool, unique, powerful,
art.
9. Neil Diamond - not a popular pick but he is both a fabulous singer and songwriter
10.Pat Benatar - Her old stuff still kicks ass.
11.Ozzy - self explanatory.
12.Alanis Morrissette - She created her own style of singing,
and in my opinion one of our truly great song writers
13.Jani Lane - I just love his writing, very under appreciated
I believe.
14.Bruce Dickenson - before there was Queensryche, there was
Iron Maiden w/ Dickenson.
15.Ronnie James Dio - the little man with magical words and
the giant voice.
16.Melissa Etheridge - as far as live acts go she is a must see.
17.Tara Slone (Joydrop) check out how she alters the mood
on Beautiful off of their cd Metasexual.
18.John Lennon - A wonderfully beautiful human being, I am
thankful that I lived in a world where we had a John Lennon.
19.Kid Rock - Todays great innovator, I must admit I love it
when he raps, but even more when he sings.
20.My last pick is actually a new comer to my list, and while
her heritage and a recommendation by the guy at number 1 on
this list, encouraged me to check her out, it was her
attitude and heart that got her onto my list of favorites,
Lisa Marie Presley.

There are others (of course) and some that perhaps aren't great technical vocalists, but none the less, deserve a mention. Ozzy Osbourne, David Lee Roth, Don Dokken, Joey Tempest, John Bon Jovi, Gary Cherone - the list goes on, and they've all bought me a lot of listening pleasure (and still do)

Paul McCartney
Robert Plant
Jan Gilan
Rony James Dio

10/09/04: Dmitry Vasilyev - mats1991@hotmail.com
1. Mark E. Smith (The Fall) -- possibly the best out there, though he can't sing at all!!!
2. Matt Johnson (The The) -- what a voice!
3. Juliana Hatfield (Blake Babies) -- why no women at all here?
4. Roger Daltrey (The Who)
5. Elizabeth Fraser (Cocteau Twins) -- utterly unique singing, there's no one else like her

...and there are so many more -- Mark Eitzel (American Music Club), Nick Drake, Greg Dulli (Afghan Whigs), Calvin Johnson (Beat Happening), Steve Marriott (Small Faces), Shawn Smith (Satchel), Syd Barrett, Kim Deal (Breeders), Leonard Cohen, Brian Wood (Devilhead), Bob Mould (Husker Du), Jim Reid (Jesus & Mary Chain), Lou Reed (VU), Amelia Fletcher (Talulah Gosh/Heavenly)...

And I'm sure vocalists don't necessarily have to have great vocal range or register or be professionally trained to make their singing sound interesting and memorable. So if you haven't heard some of these, try to check them out. Technicality and range are NOT the first things to mention...

23/05/04: Adam - KX_80_1999@yahoo.com
1)Robert Plant (Led Zeppelin) had the most incredible vocal range imaginable, and he looked like a rock star should, he was the definition of cool, still is! He still sounds good to this day!
2)Steven Tyler (Aerosmith) Another great voice, he had his own style, made the songs sound good, hes getting a bit worn out
nowadays, but he does but in great effort for a 50 yr old plus guy
3) Dexter Holland (The Offspring) Now heres a vocalist who isnt reconized much, but I do enjoy his voice on the newer songs they do, it sounds nice and crisp and smooth. His older stuff his voice wasnt half as good
4) Robbie Van Zant (Lynyrd Skynyrd) That honky tonk voice of his was awesome, gave the band even more of that awesome deep south flavor to it RIP
5)Kurt Cobain (Nirvana) definatly a very characterized voice, raspy and powerful, not many people seem to like it too much but I think it adds to the feelings of their songs

1. Freddy Mercury (Queen)
Probably the most distinguishable and instantly recognizable vocal delivery in rock history. Freddy's mock-operatic tone and harmonized overdubs are regal and bombastic. Whenever he took the stage, all eyes were on him.

2. Ozzy Osbourne (Black Sabbath)
Another extremely unique and recognizable vocalist with an integral role in rock/metal history. While he might not have possessed the same technical skill as some of his contemporaries, Ozzy sang with conviction and soul that has gripped millions and millions of listeners.

3. Ian Gillan (Deep Purple, Black Sabbath)

Ian Gillan deserves immense credit for daring to push the boundaries of traditional, accessible sounding rock'n'roll singing. His charismatic bluesy style abled him to lead one of rock's biggest monsters, Deep Purple. But Gillan also displayed a superior operatic style that pushed the voice to its limits (check out "Child In Time") which would later influence singers like Rob Halford and David Byron.

4. David Byron (Uriah Heep)

Though ultimately not very commercially successful, Uriah Heep have provided a unique display of compositional skills and especially vocal abilities over the past three decades. In the early '70s, vocalist David Byron followed Ian Gillan's footsteps and developed one of the most lethal and haunting shrieks ever recorded on vinyl, later to be adapted by the likes of King Diamond.

5. Bruce Dickinson (Iron Maiden)

Bruce Dickinson's bellowing voice seems to be of unmatched power. His skillfulness with vocal harmony is what really causes him to shine in Iron Maiden's most essential moments.

Graham Bonnet, Phil Lynott, Geddy Lee, Rob Halford, Joe Lynn Turner, Ronnie James Dio, Geoff Tate

Oh, there are a lot, but ok, the very best 5 are:
1. JON BON JOVI/RICHIE SAMBORA(Ok, I am a Jovi-Fan, but doesn't
matter which song of them you hear, it's great and their
voices are simply fantastic.-listen to "Always", "Wanted Dead
Or Alive", "Living On Prayer", "Bed Of Roses", "It's My Life"
...I could go on..., they are the best damn rockin band
on god's earth!)
2. BRYAN ADAMS(Go to the next concert of him and you know what
I mean-his voice is so amazing, so unique, so.....
...undescribable)
3. BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN The King Of Rock'n'Roll
4. STEVEN TYLER
5. MICK JAGGER

13/03/02: marron cox - valeran316@aol.com
god, it's so hard to pick just 5, but i'll narrow it down. and PLEASE don't laugh at my choices.
1. SEBASTIAN BACH. i mean, DAMN. the man could SING. sebastian bach should've gone down as one of the great rock voices of all time, but instead he'll have to settle for semi-legendary status as the ex-lead singer of almost forgotten early nineties metal band skid row. he has the best range and vibrato of any male singer i've EVER heard. his voice kills me, it's so beautiful. and so was he... :) his voice is just so POWERFUL, i can't say enough about it. just listen to "In a Darkened Room," "Wasted Time," "Quicksand Jesus," "Monkey Business," "Livin' on a Chain Gang" (the high note after the guitar solo) or Skid Row's covers of Rush's "What You're Doing" and Hendrix's "Little Wing" and you'll know what i'm talking about.
2. JON BON JOVI. i told you not to laugh. listen to "Always" or Bed of Roses, and then shut up.
3. STEVEN TYLER. anything he does is just golden
4. AXL ROSE. tied with steven tyler from Aerosmith. one of the most original voices ever, once again coming through with versatility and outstanding range. he has about 5 or 6 totally different voices, and all of them are just captivating.
5. KURT COBAIN. he wasn't in the game to be labeled a great vocalist, but i love his style anyway. it has it's own mark to it. tortured and angry, pure to raspy, he was just great. we miss you, kurt.

I'm new here. Hi. Just stumbled on this site from another link, but glad I did...
Ok, here goes, in no random order:
1. Geddy Lee, RUSH - This may be biased, b/c I am a HUGE Rush fan, but don't you guys think that Geddy always brought the proper emotion to Neil's fantastic lyrics?
2. Adam Duritz, Counting Crows - Ok, not hard rock, but still a great lyricist, and I always feel what he's trying to convey in every song. Isn't that what's important?
3. Paul Stanley, KISS - "Heaven's on Fire"-'nuff said.
4. Gary Sherone, Van Halen (just kidding)--Actually I'm a bigger DLR/old Van Halen fan, but I gotta give Sammy credit.
5. Robert Plant, Led Zeppelin
Many more, too many to mention, but most of whom appear on this list.
