Those ratings are certainly not set in stone. That said, with that system, changing your opinion on a singular song doesn't tend to change the ratings of an album with 10-12 (or more) songs.

For me, the end result has always been the strength of the songs. A good song is a good song, regardless of how well it was performed or recorded. Magnum production, for example, ranges all over the place from very good to....umm, shall we say something with less positive feelings. The pre-Storyteller's Night material is questionable at best. The remaster of Storyteller's Night helped a lot from the original, but I don't think that production sounded "current" in any decade. It simply is what it is. Vigilante is too pop, Goodnight LA is muddled and did a great job of stripping any originality from the band, and Sleepwalking is weak and lacking power--at least on certain songs. That's just the "old" albums without going into the newer ones.

The last thing I'll bring up is how

For me, Storyteller's Night is the complete package--pardon the pun. Cover art, sequencing, mood. One of the few albums I've ever heard that is just about perfect.

I'm not sure how one would bring something like this up in a rating however. To me, it's more of a subjective comment that may or may not affect the final score.

I don't think anyone can do this 100% all of the time. If for no other reason, you aren't the same person 5 or 10 years down the road, and tastes do change. The best answer is to be honest with yourself at that time.

I've always had trouble with the early Magnum albums. I guess to some extent, one could say it's just not my preferred style of music, and they started coming around after a couple of attempts. Legitimate point though--the production and, to an extent arrangement, on those early albums do them no favors whatsoever. I love the live version of Changes, and they just didn't get that in the studio. Similar comments with Back to Earth from the CtD era.
