My system is fairly easy, if one actually would want to go to the trouble. Rate all tracks 1-10.

Generally speaking, for me, it works something like this...
10 - classic (you know it when you hear it)
9.5 - almost classic (if there is any doubt, it's 9.5)
9 - strong contender to make best of compilation
8.5 - very good
8 - solid album track
7.5 - might consider deleting this off the album
7 - filler
6.5 and below - varying qualities of bad to worse

Take all the tracks, and do an average.

Then, I've got a file with everything listed in a 0.05 increments (9.5, 9.45, 9.40, etc). For every .5 points, it translates out to a 10pt scale on a 1-100 rating. A solid 8.00 average comes across as a 70, an 8.5 as an 80, etc. Notice than a 9.5 would be a 100. I still haven't heard an album that hits 9.5, much less anything higher. There are a couple that are very close, however. The Storyteller's Night to Wings of Heaven trilogy all rank above 9.0 for me.

What you get out of this is a generally unbiased way of rating an album. It also distinguishes between the very enjoyable album and the all-time classic, which is my chief complaint of Andrew's system. This happens because the average changes a lot when you are at the top end of the scale and you have an outlier. Of course, it also means that an album that trails off at the end comes out lower on the scale, even though the front half might be really, really good.

It's not a perfect system (and there are certainly some flaws contained within), but it tends to eliminate the bias that otherwise shows up when you try to rank albums. I've found otherwise that I tend to over-rank the high points and not take into account the lesser quality songs.
