It's not in the normal Journey mould. But overall I like it. Not 100% but nothing is!
Schon hasn't wrote a decent solo for a long time. His meanderings are souless and unmelodic, when he slows down he's unbeatable. Unfortunatly the album lacks the control of early albums, writing for himself rather than writing for the song. The chances are definatly there, the parts behind the solo are ripe for melody and he's just widdled over them.
His rhythm work is outstanding, as always!
The guitar sound is very different from anything I've heard from him in a long time.
The drums sound huge.
The backing vox, something I would expect to hear are not in the mix enough, but Journey never have them too high and thats the magic of the way they work them into the songs. They need to have a little more.
Arnel is good, not brilliant. Very dry sounding vocal.
The songs are not brilliant, but good....tantra is appalling!.
There are some real muso moments on there, too many muso moments for even my liking.
The mix isn't brilliant but not too bad, I'm listening to it through a very good pair of earphones on my phone and I can hear everything.
