I like the 1987 album version of "Here I Go Again". The version with Dann Huff is way too slick and radio friendly. It has no balls at all and is a very watered down version of an otherwise superb song.
"Crying In The Rain 1987" is not amazing, I agree.
I must say that even though they may sound a bit "thin" today, the original versions had a warmth and depth - actually everything recorded until 1982 has warmth and depth that Coverdale never managed to recapture again. That was the difference between a British blues rock band and an US hard rock band. Same name but very diffrent bands.
