Re: Never understood why Leppard went with Jim Steinman to produce Hysteria.....
IMHO:
Steinman went on to write & produce Bat II, one of the very best produced albums in the history of rock, if not THE best.
Steinman is a genius, both as a songwriter/lyricist & producer, the Leppard guys are not any of that. Steinman is clearly not a "normal" guy. He's got that in common with many creative geniuses.
Hysteria is probably at least 75% Mutt Lange and high end studio gear.
I remember reading something about this subject... and here it is:
http://forums.melodicrock.com/phorum33/read.php?f=1&i=345682&t=345451&v=fSteinman:
""So we get the drum machine out, like Mutt says, and program it. Rick starts to play along, and he's really good! He was as good as any rock 'n' roll drummer I've ever worked with. So we use all live drums.
"Mutt comes down two weeks into recording, (He had helped the band during pre-production but originally opted out of producing. - Ed.) listens to a little of the drums, which sound perfect to me. And he goes, 'What are you doing? You're gonna throw these poor kids careers' in the toilet!' This was with the drummer right there! So we have to do the drums his way."
-end of quote
This is why I couldn't and still can't listen to Hysteria. I never understood what drum machines had to with hard rock... Anyway it surely helped Leppard to commercial success.. which they never would have gained with Steinman.
Not sure about what I tried to say with this post... apart from claiming that Steinman is a genius. ... ;-)
