IMO it is much due to the Walmart deal (with all that packed into the deal; price, formats, exclusivity and marketing) and of course it doesn't hurt that it's a great album either. And as always people in other parts of the world are looking to what sells in the US, and follows the Americans example - even if without the Walmart deal they still buy the album.
