Forget Phil Collen..all things considered it was the addition of that guy that took DL to the next level. Willis was a drunk and average player at best, Clarke...great writer, great player in the loose style of your Page and every inch a rock star etc..but Collen is a supreme musician with a huge array of talent in writing and playing. His love of new wave, punk and especially The Police (Andy Summers) made a huge impact on the DL sound. I'm not saying PC is DL...no, but he coupled with Mutt has that ear that fashions the songs.
Do you really think if they had got Willis thru his booze problems and he had stayed, they would have made records the quality of Hysteria? No way jose!
