I saw the music industry declining from inside retail. It was easy to see what was going to happen. And obvious to me that people would only really miss specialist music stores when they were gone. But downloading isn't the only reason for that. An even bigger reason was the industry's greed for more sales..........irrespective of profit! And by that I mean by putting music into the supermarkets. For supermarkets music has no value. It is simply a loss leader, where the profits can made up on other items in the store. The result? The devaluing of the music/movie product. The specialists couldn't afford to reduce the prices and keep profit margins, so they slowly started to fold.
And then people realised they didn't need to buy music anyway........they could just steal it! For a generation music is just freeware/shareware.
It's not.
I just can't believe that people find it surprising where the industry is at right now. It was obvious what was happening!
