Exactly. If no one will pay for the music then it will sound cheap. It already does in most cases. Home recording, programmed drums, flat mixes (and then everything gets comprossed beyond belief at the mastering).
Music (and articles) once took a fair amount of time & resources to write and record/produce. I do believe the outcome did benefit from that.
As for now the world is turning faster and faster and fewer things are "thoroughly made". I used to be a bookbinder and have seen the decay of that and many other crafts. Making fine sounding records is one of those crafts.
