I think is more publicity than other thing... anyway, good for him.

IMHO I think that the way to go is with lower cost of CDs or downloads by adding advertisements. If people don't want to spend 15-20$ in a CD becuase they can get it free on the web, well, sell the CD for 3-5$ but have several pages of advertisements inside. Or if you offer mp3s, do it like Peter Gabriel's webstore with advs.

Google is free but earns a ton of money from advs.
Tv is free (ok, you can pay cable or satellite, but you can have some channels free) and they live from advs, there are free newspapers that live from advs, even regular newspapers really live more from the advs than from the 1$ you pay for them, and so on...

So, these are my 2 cents, cheaper CDs with advs...
