Ain't it the truth?

"I feel your pain."

My site is positioned somewhere between yours and Andrew's in terms of traffic (last month I served just over a million pages equaling about 7 million hits).

I've approached the various labels about being on their promo lists, but other than Perris, all I've gotten has been deafening silence; in most cases not even the courtesy of a response. One of the major AOR labels (name withheld) gave me a sob story about it being too expensive to mail CDs to the U.S... so I responded that if cost was the issue, that I would help cover the postage costs and/or they could combine shipments monthly or quarterly... no interest.

That's when I finally said "screw it!" and stopped reviewing CDs entirely. I can't afford to buy every release that comes out on every label. The cost would eat me alive. I do purchase the ones that I am most likely to enjoy and retain in my personal collection, and that "field" ends up being the population I draw from when compiling my "Best of 200X" list for Heavy Harmonies. Does that skew the results by not including bands or material I wouldn't normally listen to? Sure, but the dollar only goes so far and the labels sure as hell aren't helping. When the cost is coming out of my pocket, it's going to go for material that I'm likely to enjoy personally.

If a band or label gets upset that I didn't include their CD for evaluation, then they only have themselves to blame. That sounds harsh but it's true.

Oddly enough (and this refers back to sentiments expressed earlier in this thread), it's the bands and artists WITHOUT label deals, who are releasing and distributing their own CDs, that are the most positive and appreciative of any exposure they receive. When they email and ask if I'd feature samples and links on the promo audio page, they usually jump at the chance to send out a promo kit.

Contrast this with the seeming arrogance on the part of the labels; they leave the distinct impression that web sites are somehow beneath them and not even worthy of courtesy, let alone consideration or cooperation...
