Sorry guys,

totally disagree to most of the posts here. As a PR & marketing girl, I'm dealing with all these matters myself every day. There isn't any masterplan around for the "prefect promo or marketing campaign". What a product needs depends on the territory to be promoted and the musical style of the product as such --> there should be an individual promo & marketing plan on every title. As online & radio things may help out most titles in the US for example, it is still print, touring & (ever growing) retails activities in Germany who are the ones to focus on - unless someone is signed to a major label as they have different budgets and power. They are too much conservative in what they do though.

As for bands printing album themselves and selling directly to distributors: works for bands with name-dropping (maybe of the status of Firehouse, Harem Scarem and bigger) but not for no-name bands or newcomers. As a newcomer, you'll never get the priority a label will have to put on a distributor and only a few of your CD's will end up in the shops.
I'm working with many smaller bands as well who 'only' sell their self-printed CD's to distributors or mailorders. Most of them are happy to recoup their costs, do not spend any money on marketing as there is no budget and in the end, they sell 1/5 of what a label usually does. On top of it all, they do not get any chance for touring and achieve less spots in the press, because they are not signed to a "real" label.

To me, the labels are not the problem in this business anyways - it's definitely the distributors and the question "how to get a CD into the shop". Many of them don't do proper work but make the biggest money with less effort than everyone else.

Cheerz,
Birgitt
