I think in any sphere free editorial gained by intelligent use of PR is always going to have more direct benefit than advertising. Even back in the late 80s I was far more likely to buy an album on the back of a good review/interview/news story in Kerrang than I was as a result of a full page ad promoting the album. I used the ads to keep myself informed of gigs more than anything else.
