Early Savatage was pure metal! They started to get more orchestrated with 'Hall of the Mt. King' through 'Streets'. They lost one of the two brothers in the band in 1993, Criss Oliva (guitarist) was killed and in my opinion the band ceased to exist. Criss was such an intregal part of the band and the writing process that he was impossible to replace and therefore the band has blown chunks since.
I would recommend buying any of the following, pure guitar heaven:
Sirens
Dungeons Are Calling
Power Of The Night
Hall of the Mt. King
Gutter Ballet
Streets
Edge of Thorns (Criss' Last Recordings)
IMHO anything after 'EOT' isn't worthy of the name Savatage!
