Glenn Hughes and Tommy Bolin for me,and Deep purple itself to a slightly lesser degree.
Ican vividly remember buying a copy of kerrang in'82 with a Bolin special written by simon robinson and being blown away by the tale of a man with such superhuman talents but who subsequently threw the whole thing away to drugs!
I have still ,to this day,yet to hear a guitarist half as good as Tommy Bolin!
Glenn Hughes,on the other hand, remains a revelation to this very day. The man is STILL the yardstick by which any other "singer" can hope to be measured.I remember buying my vinyl copy of "come taste the band"and playing the thing all day,not believing what I was hearing!
Hughes,unlike Mr Bolin,came through the narcotic haze to have a great career (with a bit of a dip in the 80s,mind you!) and I had the pleasure of seeing his "soul mover" tour earlier this year and it got me wondering what we have to look forward to when he's singing better than ever at the so called "twilight" of his career! .How many singers do you know who have released their masterpiece at the age of 54!!!!
