I think it only really matters if the member is integral to the sound of the band, and even that can be reproduced well enough in the studio that nobody knows. Bands have done it forever as others have said. Hugh did most of the Bon Jovi records, not Alec, just like others mentioned with other bands. Nobody knew and nobody cared, so I wouldn't consider it cheating.
