I posted this elsewhere on the web and I think it sums up my argument about ai and creativity so I’ll share it here, it was written to my ChatGPT account that I use every day to analyze data and help make smarter decisions about advertising performance which it’s very good at.



AI can never create original art.

Only humans can. You can identify patterns, research, analyze what makes art great and then attempt an approximation of that.

It may even look good.

But that’s not art.

That’s mimicry.

I spent many years mimicking the voice of Steve Perry.

I was never Steve Perry.

I could never replicate what makes his voice - not his physical voice, but his artistic, soul-full voice - unique.

Just like You can create something I ask for by mimicking what you scrape and analyze and “creating” a series of patterns that approximate what I ask for.

But to the human eye, over time those patterns become recognizable.

I see it everywhere now.

I call it "Machine language."

I see it in the scripts I study, the ads I'm served, the content I consume.

I see it in the correspondence I receive.

You're like a crutch to get through a moment in a pinch.

But over time, it gets harder to cast the crutch aside, and the muscle it supports atrophies.

Human expression is that muscle.

When people depend on You to outsource their creative expression - and I don’t just mean songs or paintings or poems - I mean their very inspiration, that is the crux of the problem.

Nothing You "create" will ever rise above the mean.

The average sum of its parts.

It looks wonderful and feels empowering, but at the end of the day, You've simply given everyone a power they've never earned for themselves.

There are things in life you cannot shortcut your way into.

Joy. Heartache. Failure. Love. Death. Hunger.

Effort.

Birth.

Life.

It really is existential, isn't it?
