Over time, all those things were considered "cheating". We don't consider synths or electric guitars cheating now just because they're so common.
Some bands would even put disclaimers like "NO SYNTHESIZERS USED ON THIS RECORDING" because "real" musicians viewed them as a threat and a bad thing. Same w/ Pro-Tools, same with drum programs, harmonizers, pitch-correction, amp simulators, etc. Every new thing that makes creating music easier is "cheating" until it becomes common.
