I hear ya, but I think it's all down to execution. If you're super on the nose, like Bryan Adams' latest track basically calling out Trump's rhetoric, it gets old fast. But if you're more nuanced and are diving into, say, how challenging today's world is, that could work (e.g., Suicide Life from 30 years ago has a social consciousness).

So I hope he means "almost political" in a broader sense. On one hand, politics can get boring when it either feels preachy or too "of the moment". On the other, I don't entirely relate to some folks' allergic reaction to it because there's virtually no part of our daily lives that's untouched by politics. Everything is political.

Anyway, sounds like this may be his swan song, so I hope it's a good one.
