Well, if Roth’s to be believed in his interviews around that time, the band had written about half an album’s worth of material by that time, and appeared to be still in the album-tour-album cycle.
Who really knows, though. Roth didn’t like being holed up in a studio for months at a time while Eddie did. And with Eddie getting involved in keyboards, that amount of studio time was likely to continue. And it sounded that EVH enjoyed being home more than on the road. Add to that Roth being constantly being on “10”, looking back, a split seemed inevitable.
