Like you I hated the production on my original American released CD. Then I heard the Japanese remaster. Oh my Lord, what a big difference. The old release was dumped on a CD with no mastering. So yeah, it sounds thin and weak. The Japanese release (which is every Japanese release) since at least 2010 is much better.

It's still in fourth or fifth place among their first five albums but it improved drastically.

Edit - The Japanese have been using a remaster since at least 2002.
