I think they have always been melodic, that's what pulled me in even if the vocals were an acquired taste. You make some valid points that most bands stick to a certain formula, but even within those boundaries you can come up with something a bit new or different. Also, it's easier to listen to Lou Gramm or Steve Perry over and over again than David Draiman ;-)
