Richie also made comments about not enjoying the direction that the band were headed in musically, the constant touring and that fact that he isn't going to miss playing some songs (he specifically mentioned Runaway).
Richie and Jon have not got on for years, there's always been tension there. There's no way he left for one specefic reason after 30 years. It was a build up of lots of reasons, I'm sure, on both sides.

Exactly right. Once the 90s hit and Jon wanted to move away from the 80s rock image, he couldn't wait to get rid of Alec. The interview was the perfect excuse, so Alec handed it to him on a platter. Maybe he knew his time was up anyways.
