Yeah a little hard for Eric. But for most, it's harder to put out music today in one instance. And in another, it's easier than it ever was. It's easy because anyone can buy software and a few other recording tools and do it. But there's no guarantee they will get good production results. That said, a good song can usually stand on its own. My new rule of thumb is, if I can play the song all acoustic and it still has the impact and the hook needed for a good song, win/win. I hate the production on my first album but I love those songs. I can do them acoustically and still entertain.
The other side of the coin is, quite a few musicians are struggling and are working other jobs to survive. Recording, writing and everything that goes with it, takes a lot of time. Also, take an artist away from other musicians and sometimes they sound one dimensional. I wrote my new single with 2 other guys. I did the majority in it, but the opening riff was my bassist friend Joey. My new album, the same two guys wrote the entire thing with me, lyrics and all. Sometimes I did the majority, most of the time it was all 3 of us.
The end result is an album I could never have done on my own. I think that's the problem with some solo artists. Without outside intervention, it's luck of the draw really. I loved John Sykes in Blue Murder. It was different than Whitesnake and great for what it was, but to me, not quite as effective as Whitesnake.
And lastly, I think where an artist is in their life, determines how the writing and songs sound. I was in such a good/bad/inspirational state when I did my new album, even if no one but me likes it, it's definitely some of my best work ever. I honestly don't mean that egotistically. It's meant with happiness and being excited about how I've grown as an artist and musician from 2004 until now. And, I think it helps immensely when you choose the right people to grow and evolve with that you bring with you on your journey.
