As a second thought: It's not necessarily about the technical merit, but in what way is the guitarist important for the sound and image of the band?
Ozzy - it's all about Ozzy, no matter what guitarist is in the band.
Bon Jovi - Although Sambora was a great guitarist in the 80s, Jon has proven with Blaze of Glory back in 1990, that he doesn't need Sambora to produce a fantastic album. Today we can see, with Phil X, that he doesn't need him in a live setting at all.
Dokken - George Lynch played a significant role in defining the sound with his guitar playing. However, Jon Levin is totally able to emulate his style and more importantly is willing to do so. Therefore Lynch wasn't irreplaceable at all.
