I deliberately haven't listened to any of the new Tesla yet (waiting for release day like a sad old romantic!), but one thing interests me...
A lot of people have complained that it sounds "nu" for being downtuned. But downtuning has been going on a lot longer than nu metal. All the Motley Crue albums have the guitars in D (and not just drop D, where you only down tune one string... Mick Mars detunes all six), and they got the idea from Van Halen. Black Sabbath had drop D stuff too. On "Five Man Acoustical Jam", remember when Frank says "Hang on, I gotta tune up... well, tune down actually."
I can believe that there are modern elements on Into the Now but I am not discouraged by that. I don't own a single grunge album, or wish to. But I can hear nods to grunge on Bust a Nut, and it's still my favourite album ever. Tesla are such great musicians they know how to absorb the best from all the music that's out there.
Bring on March 8th!
