I certainly understand the desire to distance oneself from "political concerns", and I think most sensible people would prefer to be able to just go about living their everyday lives without it. But I think it's vitally important for anyone of good will who believes in the equality of all people to stand up and make their voice heard whenever the suppression or denial of rights of others is being enabled or ignored. As Dr. King so eloquently put it:
“In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends". We all like to think "it can't happen here", but who would have believed 4 years ago that we'd see what just happened at the capital? Time and again history has shown that democracy is a very fragile ideal that can easily be lost when folks become too complacent. What doesn't directly effect you today can eventually get around to you, too- and often by the time it does, it's too late:
