For me, what it comes down to is the fact that it can/has come down to a choice between these two.
I'm pretty sure that I would be dedicating my life (every scrap of time, energy, effort, etc.) to doing anything and everything I possibly could to change the electoral system if I lived in the U.S.A.
I'm a firm believer in democracy, but when the system works in such a way that it comes down to a choice between two such as these, then something needs to change. There are many other countries out there with different democratic systems - ones which cause residents to grumble and complain, but which still seem preferable to one that is so polarized and winds up producing such a pathetic pair of options. As an outsider, I'm left thinking...."For the love of God, there are well over 300 million people in that country! It has produced some of the greatest minds in the history of humankind. How can it be that these are the two options being put forward?"
I don't pretend to know a lot about the American democratic system. I just think that, if this is happening - if the most powerful nation on our planet has a system which requires its residents to choose between these two - then it's high time for system overhaul.
