Nice telescope RNR! I used to have a Meade LX10 - great telescope, but I didn't use it enough. Too big and heavy, so I decided to get something more portable and user-friendly, which I think would also suit MMF's son.

I ended up with a Sky Watcher 127 Maksutov-Cassegrain. They're great for lunar/ planetary observations (long f12 focal length), but not as long and cumbersome as a refractor (they're like a long focal length refractor, but the internal mirror keeps the telescope length MUCH shorter).

It comes with either a 102mm or 127mm diameter primary mirror (maybe 102mm is best for a beginner?), and GOTO controller to automatically find objects (great for when you're just learning to find your way around the sky)

If he's more interested in deep sky objects (galaxies, nebulae), then a Schmidt-Cassegrain (like the one RNR has) might be better.
