I like Tom Petty but he never made a better album than the first with The Heartbreakers which is an absolute classic. After that, 'Your Gonna Get It' was a let down although it's still good but there was nothing as good as 'Breakdown', 'Fooled Again', 'Luna' or 'Strangered In The Night'. After that I found he had some killer songs but was moving away from the rock 'n'roll origins of the early stuff and into the mid western area. I appreciate he became a major star with Damn The Torpedoes but I can honestly say I never enjoyed an of his albums as much the debut.
As for comparing him to John Waite, it's a bit silly as TP's music is not even in the same genre. However, I'd go with the John Waite album over any TP ones. Same with Rick Springfield and Bryan Adams who are pretty much in the same ballpark. I am a big RS fan and have everything he's done but still wouldn't take him over JW. Bryan Adams first 4 albums are great but after that I lost interest and he lost the plot and for me can't touch JW, even with his best album 'Reckless'.
Just my opinion guys :-)
