Funny you should mention him, as I had just ordered the S/T Rock Candy release the other day, a long time favorite of mine that had never been on CD before...
Yeah, what a talented guy- I actually first started hearing about him thru his production work on some disco/ dance albums he was producing (Debbie Jacobs, Ann-Margret and some other artists) and noticed that Dan Holmes was his drummer (Dan had been in Marcus Malone’s band, if you remember the “Marcus“ S/T CD- these were all regional guys who I knew)....anyway Sabu then did his own semi- cheesy disco rock S/T album, then followed that up with the second S/T Sabu ep I mentioned above (loosely known as Sabu II in these parts) which rocked pretty solidly... then on to the Kid Glove Project, then “Heartbreak“, the Only Child albums, and the rest as they say is history...
It’s unfortunate that with all the work he was doing from the late 70’s to late 80’s he never seemed to get that “big break“ that would have put him over the top as a solo artist- yet he was also producing and contributing to other people’s projects with perhaps a higher degree of success than himself.
Once he got into the 90’s I kinda feel like his peak had passed and although I still have that 90’s stuff on CD it’s not anything that excites me the way his 80’s output did.
Lastly, the heavy/ growling approach he’s taken on the last couple albums really didn’t appeal much to me at all.
