I don't think the drumming is anything exceptional although it's solid. There's nothing particularly clever, no off beat patterns, clever fills etc. Certainly the guy can play but I have to admit when I read your review and comments on your post I was expecting something more.
As for the drum sound, when I said it was processed, I didn't mean programmed. I meant an electric kit was used and clearly there's a difference in the results produced between the natural tones achieved when playing acoustic drums, as opposed to what the computer in a pad translates into sounds. The toms are particularly obvious
As it just happens to be out at the same time, compare the drum sound on the Black Swan to H.e.a.t, for me Matt Starr's is more natural and therefore more enjoyable.
The best drummers in the world can play electric kits and it will never sound as good as the real thing. Neil Peart being an obvious choice, listen to his drum solos during the parts where he plays the electric drums, still brilliant musicianship but the acoustic drum parts sound better.
Happy for you that you have gotten so much listening time out the album, I've played it 3 times so far and will give it a few more spins before it gets shelved.
Of course this is my own personal opinion and I'm just giving an explanation as to why I believe that. I know that 'H.e.a.t are one of the most popular bands talked about on here but they don't float my boat as much as other bands. I like them, but I just don't love them.
Waiting For Monday, has it's flaws for sure ie production could have been better but I just get more enjoyment out of it than H.e.a.t.
