Worked for 14 years from 1987 as a primary school teacher. Then I got promoted into education advisory work focused on improving the teaching of English in primary schools (part of the then UK government's National Literacy Strategy). Did that until the city council here in Peterborough made me redundant in one of many austerity-based reshuffles we'd been through over the years.
I now work as a self-employed education advisor essentially doing the same job working independently. I don't make anything like as much money but it's immensely satisfying and schools with whom I work report that the things I do with them and their teachers have real impact on the quality of education for the young people in them, which is what really matters.
