I think the album suffers because the album that preceded it was so good. The songs just weren't as good. Mind you, SOTT is probably better than 90% of what is released today. The first half of the record is very very good. I don't remember playing the second half of the album anywhere near as much. It probably didn't help the one big single from the album the fans had heard before. 'Now You're Gone' is still my fave from the album and a hugely under rated track from that era.
Vai is an amazing guitarist. Just not a good fit for Whitesnake and the more bluesy sound. But in theory, his OTT playing seems like a good fit with the music at the time. Big hair, big guitars etc. But his style just doesn't fit Coverdale and the Whitesnake sound. Mind you, I listen to 'Kitten's Got Claws' and I still get goosebumps.
