I’ve never seen Vai as the logical next step after Sykes. Whitesnake were always about feel and bluesy playing, even with Sykes and his metallic approach.
Vai’s ego was out of control at that point, even worse than Widow Twanky himself I’d say, and the deal that was obviously struck to get Vai effectively made it a solo project with Coverdale on it.
Ironically, Doug would have been a great option.
