...Yeah, clearly it comes down to being a matter of taste. I'm well aware of the fact that those earlier MSG albums are what most people seem to prefer. But tastes differ, and I definitely don't.
I get that some folks feel the McAuley material was more generic or mainstream, maybe less unique and flashy...that it maybe didn't showcase his chops as much. In the past I've seen people accuse Michael as selling out and trying to write hits or more commercial material, to become more like the popular MHR acts of the day (presumably the Bon Jovi's and Dokkens???).
And that's probably why the McAuley era appeals more to me. That material was more about paying attention to the songs, and Michael playing what the song needed. Dare I say that it was a little less self-indulgent than the earlier stuff?
I might have to go on a hunt for the magazine I made reference to. I still have pretty much all of my magazines from the time I started buying them around '81, I think. If my memory serves me, they gave a partially completed song to a few different singers and had each complete it. McAuley came out on top, so they went with him. Something like that anyways...
