Awesome - you are part of the 1% that thinks the second album wasn't a MAJOR drop off from the first and understand why Geffen shelved the album for a while (because they knew they had a dud on their hands) before finally releasing it.
The biggest hit on 1987 is a song Coverdale wrote without Sykes. Dann Huff also did a bunch of guitar work on the album after Sykes was fired.
Creatively, 1987 is overrated, which is why many people think Slide It In is the better album. Many people also think the Marsden Moody version of the band is better than the hair metal version of Whitesnake. I also think Coverdale/Page is better, but yes - album sales wise, 1987 is king.
Coverdale doesn't need Sykes as clearly he has continued a successful career for many years after 1987 to this very day, where as Sykes' career is in the toilet and he is a drunk.
Have you listened to Sykes' new album online? It's fucking awful and he's had forever to come up with greatness. I am so glad that The Winery Dogs went with Kotzen instead.
