To be fair, there was a different producer and co-writer. Not to mention Vai sounds nothing like Sykes.
Clearly Coverdale can write music very well as opposed to just lyrics if he we look at his entire career.
1987 wasn't like a Van Halen situation, where Eddie writes the music and Dave or Sam write the lyrics. Coverdale wrote both music and lyrics WITH Sykes.
