Most of the people in the US who own guns aren't "nuts". Unfortunately, all who own them are lumped in with the few who actually are. Banning guns won't solve the problem. Criminals and anyone else who intend to harm others will find a way to get them on the black market or will resort to a different method. Getting guns on the black market then opens up a whole new breed of criminals much like the bootleggers during prohibition.
At best, you may prevent some "heat of the moment killings" or some accidental ones. I'm not saying that everyone should be able to own fully automatic weapons and carry them in public, but I'm against a complete ban which is what many (including many in this thread) seem to want.
If you truly want to prevent or cut down on the number of these tragedies, you need to start dealing with the issues that cause them...mental illness, radical ideologies, anti-social behavior, criminal activity, etc. You can get rid of all the guns, but unless you are willing to deal with the motivations behind these types of crimes, they'll just find another weapon of choice. You can only blame the NRA, Trump and "U.S. culture" for so long.
