Part of the problem is a lack of A&R these days and the band surrounding themselves with yes men.

In the 80's and 90's for example, A&R people would tell the band when songs weren't good enough. Producers would do the same thing.

If a band wrote and recorded 15 songs for example for an album that would only contain 12 or 13 songs, often A&R people and the producer would pick the best songs or songs they deem to be potential hits.

Today bands just write, record and release whatever and there is no one to say what works and what doesn't. Now on one side, this may seem great for artists - to have complete creative freedom, but on the other side, much more filler and just bad songs get through.

There need to be an objective filter with bands like bands have had forever, but doesn't really exist now. Someone needs to tell Frankie Banali that the new Quiet Riot album is terrible and the singer is wrong for the band, but Frontiers doesn't care. They just want to make a few bucks off of the Quiet Riot name and that's good enough.

Hell, even Frontiers was more objective and critical in the past, but now they will put their name on anything and release it regardless of quality.

The days of John Kalodner are over.
