Minidisc, vinyl and the music world of 2017...

I don’t agree that minidisc was better than CD or vinyl, but I recorded many titles from my vinyl collection onto minidisc in the nineties and for that, minidisc often sounded excellent. I am down to my last working minidisc player currently – a portable Sony (mini)discman – but the minidiscs featuring vinyl recordings still get their fair share of hours on the stereo system in my living room.

Over the last couple of years, I have started playing the original vinyl albums more again, although I’ll generally choose a CD edition of a new album over the vinyl version for practical reasons: I remember the original vinyl era well enough to not miss pops, crackles and half-distorted, screechy final songs on a vinyl side.

I’ve recently started dabbling in recording vinyl as 24bit/96kHz resolution digital files, and initial impressions of that is that perhaps a little more of the “vinyl warmth” translates into that compared to standard CD resolution, although consider that a highly subjective observation, alright? :-) In that sense, some of the enthusiasm I had in the initial minidisc era has come back to me.

The one thing I avoid if I can these days, are compressed formats: It’s a positively huge discussion which I won’t get into currently, but the music world of 2017 is in many ways strangely restrictive compared to the quality specs and musical width it truly could be capable of!

Anyway, thanks MSL for posting the original article - interesting reading!
