Quadraphonic Mixes (no replies)

So I have a quadraphonic copy of the Deep Purple machine head album which I have always loved. Its a different mix and to my ears has always sounded wonderful.
Recently I was gifted the Stormbringer album and ZZ Top's Tres Hombres, both also in Quadraphonic sound. As I said I always had a soft spot for the quadraphonic version of machine head but Stormbringer and Tres Hombres take things to a whole new level for me.
The instrument separation and clarity of mix are truly astonishing. The instrumental interplay between Blackmore and lord is a delight to hear, so clear and precise. Similar with Gibbons and Beard on the ZZ stuff. Not to mention Coverdale/Hughes vocal interplay on Stormbringer. These are a delight to the ears and in places truly astonishing quality they both had me hitting repeat several times and just brought a big daft grin to my face. I highly recommend to any fans of these albums.

Also if anybody loves a good quadraphonic mix and can recommend anything further in the melodic or general rock field I would greatly appreciate any pointers.

The Xtasy is the better album but I enjoyed both a lot to be honest. It figures as I’m a huge Erik fan and his trademarks are all over the Xtasy album. The Chez album I thought was ok at first. Cheesy obviously but still ok around a 6.5 or 7/10 album. Subsequent spins have revealed the songs to be seriously catchy. Her image may be on the tacky and “cheeky” side let’s say hehe but the songs are really really well done. I’d probably give it an 8 now and the Xtasy either an 8.5 or even a 9. I think both albums deserve a little attention. Any other opinions?

Full stop.

The obvious common thread here is JSS and Marcel. They are integral to all of these projects.

My question to you all is this:

What elements of style/sound separates these three entities?

IMO, they all have massive musicianship, amazing vocal performances, and stellar melodies.

For some reason, these were all separate entities as opposed to all being called Talisman.

I can see how the Humanimal project being maybe a little more funky? Maybe?

So, I'm asking...to your ears, what separates these three entities?

I'm hoping Jeff chimes in, as well. Cheers, dude!

"Do You Have Any Interest In Making This Kind Of Music Again?" (77 replies)

Greetings,

I often see people on here complain about latter day material from a band or artist where there may be one or two rockers and then it falls off a cliff into sleep inducing soft rock, pop rock or ballads. Be it Bryan Adams Def Leppard, Bon Jovi or others.

The thing I don't understand is why doesn't anyone ever ask these bands/artists in interviews - do you think you will ever make a front to back rock/hard rock album again?

Well to be honest, I do understand - music journalism is dead. Now everyone just gives blowjobs, so they don't want to potentially offend the band/artist and never be allowed to interview them again, but there are completely respectful and not remotely offensive ways to phrase the question just to see what their response would be. You can even phrase it as this and put the blame on the record label: has the record label ever pushed you into making a full on rock record again?

It would even be interesting just to hear them say ya, rock/hard rock isn't for me anymore - that way fans won't be disappointed when they are hoping the new album is some sort of musical comeback, but it is more of the same lame stuff they are doing recently.

Of course you hope the person isn't an asshole like Butch Walker with his Ask Me Anything. At the 7 minute mark a fan asks him if he ever feels like making a good old fashioned rock record like the stuff that inspired him. Totally fair and completely respectful question, but Walker responds like a fucking douchebag.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RkRkVfJoQxc

While Walker seems more open these days to talk about Southgang with Rick Beato types, he really went through a phase there where he was completely embarrassed to be associated with hair metal and would barely acknowledge Southgang even existing.

So what do you think? Is it really crossing some sort of line to ask a band or artist if they would ever want to do something rocking again in a completely respectful way - not in some "I think your new album sucks" way?

My God, I do not know why this band has never received any attention at all in the states. Their first 3 albums with original front man Francis Dunnery are all massive high tech AOR albums that have been compared with yes's "90125". Everyone on this board should appreciate this stuff. I follow Francis's current YouTube channel, and he seems to be a great guy to go out with and have a drink with. A massive personality. lol. I do know of Kino and the It Bites version that features John Mitchell who replaced Francis. All of that materiel is top notch. This 2nd album of theirs is a front to back classic. I hope somewhere tonight that some1 on this board checks this out and is amazed. "Yellow Christian" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JL-u_QxjA64&list=OLAK5uy_lTlw6OMpzeIQf86IfcOSGE9Nd3SLaNifk&index=3 "Black December" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3b-641fKvz4&list=OLAK5uy_lTlw6OMpzeIQf86IfcOSGE9Nd3SLaNifk&index=5 "Plastic Dreamer" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TcAkpfywECc&list=OLAK5uy_lTlw6OMpzeIQf86IfcOSGE9Nd3SLaNifk&index=8
