Hopefully I didn't forget to include anything below. In no particular order...

SINGLES
Led By Vultures - Get It Right
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ry-0M6A_IA8
Drummer Brian Tichy (Foreigner, Whitesnake, Ozzy, Snakepit) swaps his sticks for a guitar and a microphone on the band's burly debut single. Looking forward to hearing more. (This actually came out last month, but I didn't stumble across it until after I posted my March list. Apologies.)

Social Distortion - Partners In Crime
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l_xX3h7njas
Admittedly more Mike Ness & The Heartbreakers than classic Social D, but a good song is a good song.

Erik Gronwall - Born To Break
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ilih533kHkc
Dug this even better than the first single. Excited to hear the full album.

Armored Saint - Hit a Moonshot
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sHSBGCitqYc
Think I liked this one better than the first single too. Just a solid, straightforward old-school hard rock/heavy metal tune.

Confess - The Warriors
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KtrEAhGckQg
Sneering Swedish sleaze + a bitchin' harmonica solo.

The Cruel Intentions - All Hail Hypocrisy
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cGO6mTKv6y4
Didn't love the first single, but adored the second. Then I didn't love the third single, but adored the fourth (this one). That said, I'm not expecting to enjoy the new album as much as "Venomous Anonymous," but I'm still looking forward to hearing the full thing in a few weeks.

The Karma Effect - Bad Manners
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KHt3ZJ-OyfQ
My bad -- until this week, I totally slept on the first three advance tracks from their new album ("Ride or Die" is a monster!). Most of the British bluesy hard rock that Earache releases doesn't quite connect with me, but this is killer.

Airbourne - Alive After Death (Last Plane Out)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6IMg6TRZK-k
I admit I've taken these guys for granted over the years (if I want to listen to AC/DC -- which I often do! -- I'll listen to AC/DC), but this song absolutely smokes. Great to see the video already has 1M+ views as well.

Crashdiet - Chaos Magnetic
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s-LApU2iNzs
I figured these guys were toast when their last singer bailed, but I've dug all of the new tunes they've released so far.

Sha-Boom - Never Stop
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N5OqfZSicFo
I stumbled across this 15 minutes ago and listened to it twice in a row. To quote the press release: "A pure AOR-style top-down cruising down the highway track... a trip back to the halcyon ‘80s, when songs and melodies truly mattered."

Bolan - Anything But You
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r1uJ45crNew
Another serving of snotty, punky hard rock. Doesn't reinvent the wheel in any way, shape or form, but it's fun for what it is.

ALBUMS
Brother Cane - Magnolia Medicine
A classy -- and possibly a classic? -- album of timeless hard rock. Favorite song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qWCch_4Uyag

Xtasy - Phoenix
Peppy, metallic melodic hard rock from Spain that could certainly pass for Swedish! Favorite song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SuRThQyfrSs

degreed - Curtain Calls
I don't think I liked anything else on the album as much as I enjoyed the first single, and I honestly don't know how often I'll revisit the record in the coming months (especially with so much new stuff coming out in May), but I still wanted to give it a shout-out. Favorite track: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WPWD0g3uvxQ

May new releases I'm excited to hear:
Erik Gronwall - Bad Bones (5/22)
Confess - Metalmorphosis (5/15)
Social Distortion - Born To Kill (5/8)
Armored Saint - Emotion Factory Reset (5/22)
The Cruel Intentions - All Hail Hypocrisy (5/29)
Crashdiet - Art of Chaos (5/8)
The Karma Effect - Cruel Intentions (5/15)

Versions of Jimmy Barnes' "Freight Train Heart" with different instrumentation - the fuck? (9 replies)

I bought Freight Train Heart on CD eons ago. I've spun the tracks a lot over the years and am really familiar with them.

I like owning things, doing my own edits, etc, so I mostly use Spotify to discover new artists/bands. But I was out just now and decided to play the album on a whim. I first noticed is that the order was a little different (e.g., Lessons in Love was track 9 here instead of #4, etc). Whatever, maybe this happens sometimes with international editions and the like.

To my surprise, some of the music is different too! I'm not done listening, but it seems like some songs like Driving Wheels are identical, while others have different instrumentation. This kinda stopped me in my tracks because it's the same damn album.

For example, "Do or Die" starts with a fat pulsing synth that was never in my copy of the album. And my mix is muddier - on Spotify, you can hear the tinkle of the honky tonk style keys up front wheres my album has them buried in the back. Aside from differences in the actual music, the sonics sound remastered to my ears; brighter and punchier.

Or take "Seven Days" - I had never heard Jimmy ad-lib "Won't be long now, hey!" at the beginning, which was apparently erased in my CD, after which some of the instrumentation varies. Etc.

Weird. Haven't done a full side-by-side comparison, but I'm preferring the version on Spotify.

This is the cover of the one I've got:
https://www.amazon.com/Freight-train-heart/dp/B000025C37

And this seems to be the original release:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freight_Train_Heart

As far as I can tell, the good one that everyone else has is from Mushroom Records and I have the Geffen one... as with so many other examples, I guess Geffen decided to subtly dumb down and shittify the music for the American market?

I'll have to look for the original tunes now.

This has been mentioned before on the board and yet I thought the response was kind of limp. I am going to go and again push this hard for everyone to check out. I found it in the cut-out section bin of the Columbia house monthly catalog. lol. If I mention the bands connection to Yes, then I know a lot of the board members will go "Oh hell no!". So, pretend I never mentioned that fact. Fans say that this sounds like Yes's "90125" and Asia's "Astra" with more synths and less guitars. I can see that, but I believe that this sounds more like Device's "22B3". And if you are aware of that album then u should love Esquire. "Up Down Turnaround" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P_UO1CQqhZo&list=OLAK5uy_mFGpVU08tQ411qPTelgKCAJCSM01QPMHc&index=4 "Special Greetings" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NGn4xwaoIAk&list=OLAK5uy_mFGpVU08tQ411qPTelgKCAJCSM01QPMHc&index=9 The supposed hit that never was: "To the Rescue" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V2HCk9U-MdE&list=OLAK5uy_mFGpVU08tQ411qPTelgKCAJCSM01QPMHc&index=1

Ofcourse, I didn't squeeze everything in I wanted to say, but the new deluxe is incredible. I know alot of people aren't happy that "Live without a net" on cd is heavily edited, but I think that's why they called it simply "Live in New Halen 86", cause it is so heavily edited, and not exactly "LWAN". I still can't believe they edited out parts of Eds solo. How did Al authorise that??
We just have to accept aswell that we aren't going to get things we wish for when it comes to VH and with Al calling the shots.
But I express my feelings here, and try get everything out in the quick time that I've had.
Forgive my speech, I've had a stammer all my life and suffered a mini stroke in 2012. (6 replies)

Caught the show here last night in Rochester. AWesome as always...Jon is truly the living energizer bunny of prog rock at 81 years of age! His voice has never wavered over the decades...unreal. They opened with Close To The Edge (!!) and maintained a great pace afterwards. One new song which was VERY good--a hint to the new album, I assume. Jon said they'd just finished it around 6pm last night..hah. Also 2 songs from their 'True' album -- my fav 'Counties & Countries' and the epic 'Once Upon A Dream'. Alot of fans seem to dig this one (I struggle with it a bit). A bit too lengthy and disjointed for me (like some Yes). They also played ' Awaken'..another example of prog meandering IMO ( another fan fav tho). I'd much have preferred Siberian Khatru and Heart Of The Sunrise to these two--that'd made it a near perfect night. But-- it was still fantastic...catch them if they come around. A tried & true connection to our heritage past and not enough can be said about the Band Geeks-Richie C. and co. In a word--fabulous! Mindboggling how they reproduce this timeless music!
